Wilson earns provisional pole in Assen
Assen, The Netherlands (Sports Network) - Justin Wilson showed his wet-weather driving skill capturing the provisional pole for Sunday's Bavarian Champ Car Grand Prix at the TT-Circuit Assen. The No.9 RuSport driver circled the rain- slicked road course in one minute, 31.656 seconds (112.381 m.p.h.) to take the top spot.
The provisional pole victory earned Wilson one championship point and a guaranteed front row starting position for Sunday's race.
"The No.9 CDW car was fantastic," said Wilson. "I've got to thank the whole team. They've worked hard this weekend and it's nice to be quick in the wet.".
Behind Wilson were Simon Pagenaud (1:30.550), Graham Rahal (1:31.858), Tristan Gommendy (1:31.874) and Oriol Servia (1:31.900). Series points leader Sebastien Bourdais was sixth quickest.
"I got blocked in the last two laps," said Pagenaud. "I couldn't make a lap at the end. It was a bit of a shame because Team Australia gave me a really good car and I can't thank them enough."
Bourdais won the first half of the two-race European portion of the Champ Car schedule and owns a 53-point lead with five races left in the series. The three-time Champ Car Series champion led 51 of 71 laps en route to a huge 13.655-second victory.
Final qualifying is set for Saturday at 7 a.m. (et) and the race is scheduled to drop the green flag on Sunday at 7 a.m. (et).
