Thomas Lim and Byron Meth share fourth place at minus-4. Sam Horsfield, the 2013 Florida State Amateur champ, headlines a group of six players at 3-under 68. He stands alongside Kolton Crawford, Rigel Fernandes, Charlie Danielson, Robert Geibel and Trent Peterson.

John Oda, Doug Ghim and Jonathan Woo are tied at 2-under 69. Sam Saunders, Cody McManus, Ryan Tetrault, Rico Hoey, Jess Bonneau, Nick Eberhardt and Davis Hangyerei Chung are the final players in red figures at minus-1.

Defending champion Jordan Niebrugge is tied for 67th at 3-over 74.

Rank played the back nine first and carded birdies on the 12th, 17th and 18th to turn at minus-3. He jumped to 5-under with an eagle on the par-5 fourth. After dropping a shot on the sixth, Rank birdied No. 8 to share the lead.

Colgate was three groups ahead of Rank off the 10th. Colgate birdied Nos. 12 and 14 to go with seven pars on his opening nine. Around the turn, he moved to minus-3 with a birdie on the par-5 second. He closed his round with back-to- back birdies at eight and nine to post 5-under.

Thomas flew out of the gate with birdies on one and two. After consecutive birdies at five and six, he tripped to a bogey on the seventh. Thomas erased that mistake with a birdie on No. 8. He slipped to 3-under with another bogey on the 13th, but finished his round with birdies at 17 and 18 to share the lead.
