NFL Game Summary - Tennessee at Houston
(Monday, November 23rd)
Final Score: Tennessee 20, Houston 17
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Rob Bironas booted a 53-yard field goal with 47
seconds remaining and Kris Brown missed a potential tying kick for a second
straight game as Tennessee continued its resurgence with a 20-17 victory over
the Houston Texans.
Vince Young connected on 12-of-22 passes for 116 yards with a score and also
ran for 73 yards for the Titans (4-6), who are making a remarkable turnaround
after beginning the season with six consecutive defeats. Chris Johnson rushed
29 times for 151 yards and Kenny Britt caught a touchdown pass.
"We're just doing all the little things right," said Johnson. "We're out there
having fun. When we took that loss to Houston the first time we knew we owed
them coming back in here. We knew it was going to be a tough game and we were
ready for a dogfight."
Bironas, who kicked an NFL-record eight field goals during a 38-36 Titans win
over the Texans on October 21, 2007 at Reliant Stadium, put the visitors ahead
with his second kick of at least 50 yards in the second half.
"I always feel good down here, always play well down here," said Bironas. "I
don't think I've had too many misses down here. I like Houston, but I don't
think Houston likes me too much."
Young and the Titans' offense then watched as Matt Schaub moved the Texans
(5-5) into field goal range. Brown, who missed wide left on the final play of
a 20-17 loss two weeks ago at Indianapolis, was again off the mark to the same
side from 49 yards away with a second remaining.
"It's all on me, it's totally me," said Brown. "The frustrating thing for me
is we have 44 guys out there busting their tail and one guy out there not
doing his job, which is me. That's the reason you lose the game. That's hard
for me to take."
Schaub completed 25-of-39 passes for 305 yards with a pair of scores for
Houston, which will host the unbeaten Colts on Sunday.
It was the 100th regular season win in the Titans' era (1999-09). They next
have a home game against Arizona before facing the Colts in Indianapolis on
December 6.
The Titans started the winning drive at their own six-yard line following a
punt. Houston's John Busing was called for a 15-yard horse-collar tackle
penalty even though replays showed he grabbed the back of Johnson's jersey.
Johnson knifed his way through the Texans defense for a 22-yard run, and Young
later converted a huge 3rd-and-3 from the Tennessee 48 with a 12-yard scramble
to the left side. A five-yard pass to Britt set up Bironas for the go-ahead
kick.
"Houston, they're a tough defense, but they like to talk to you and get you
out of your game," said Johnson. "That's the best part of their defense. They
like to talk trash. I wouldn't say their play is the best part, but they like
to talk trash and get you out of your game. If you're a strong player and have
a strong mind that's not going to do anything for you."
Schaub then guided his team from the Houston 38 with two passes totaling 25
yards to David Anderson. That moved the ball to the Titans' 37 with 21 seconds
left, but Houston had just one timeout left. Schaub hit Kevin Walter with a
six-yard pass, but then the QB had to spike the ball to kill the clock. With
eight seconds left, Schaub ran up the middle to set up Brown's final attempt.
A short punt by the Titans gave the Texans excellent field position for their
second possession of the game, as they took over at the Tennessee 36-yard
line. Houston needed seven plays to score as Schaub connected with Steve
Slaton on a three-yard TD shovel pass on third down.
The Titans tied the game, using a nine-play, 80-yard march that bridged the
first two quarters. Young capped it by rolling to the right side and throwing
a 13-yard pass to Britt, who netted his first NFL touchdown.
Houston went back on top thanks to Schaub's 12-yard TD pass to Andre Johnson
with 4:01 left in the second quarter. Schaub highlighted the 58-yard drive
with a 32-yard toss to fullback James Casey.
Tennessee moved the ball 75 yards on its next possession with LenDale White's
one-yard scoring run tying the game with 50 seconds to go in the half. Johnson
busted off right tackle for a 36-yard gain to key the drive.
Young fumbled away Tennessee's opening possession of the second half, but
Brown pushed a 49-yard field goal try wide right on Houston's first chance
with the ball in the third quarter.
Bironas' 50-yard field goal moved the Titans to a 17-14 lead with 2:49
remaining in the third before Brown tied it with a 26-yard boot on the final
play of the quarter. Houston had a 1st-and-goal at the eight, but failed to
move another yard before the tying kick.
Bironas was wide left on a 49-yard attempt less than five minutes into the
fourth.
