Description: Rockies starter Jon Garland improved to 2-0 with seven innings of two-run ball Thursday afternoon against the Mets.
Insight: Garland didn't pitch in the big leagues last season and only made nine starts in 2011, but he has a 3.32 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and three quality starts in three turns this year. Garland has a career GB% of 45.2 and has kept the ball on the ground on 57.1 percent of his batted balls this year, which helps immensely at Coors Field.

Insight: Garland didn't pitch in the big leagues last season and only made nine starts in 2011. He went 14-12 with a 3.47 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with the Padres in his last full season and has pitched for four of the five NL West teams since 2009. Garland has a career GB/FB of 1.32, which should help him at Coors Field.

Description: Righthander Jon Garland has joined the Colorado Rockies.
Insight: Garland was let go by Seattle about 24 hours ago. He's pitched well in spring training (1-0, 2.25 ERA in four starts) and should be able to carve out a spot for himself at the back end of Colorado's starting rotation. The 33-year-old hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2011 and Coors Field can be a nightmare for pitchers. That's not a great combination. We'd pass on him in fantasy for the time being.

Description: Former Dodgers and White Sox righthander Jon Garland has agreed to a minor league contract with the Mariners.
Insight: Pitching in Seattle is a bit of a double-edged sword. Safeco Field has always been viewed as pitcher-friendly but by pitching in the American League West, Garland will have to face superstar hitters like Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Mike Trout and Nelson Cruz on a fairly regular basis. Garland last appeared in the major leagues in 2011, going 1-5 with a 4.33 ERA in nine starts for the Dodgers.

Description: Los Angeles Dodgers righthander Jon Garland had season-ending shoulder surgery. Source: Sports Network.
Insight: Garland posted double-digit wins from 2002 through 2010, but wasn't a highly-valued fantasy property because of his high career ERA (4.32) and WHIP (1.380). The news that his season is over probably won't hurt many rosters.
3/10/2011 3:00:00 PM
Description: Garland is expected to open the season on the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle.
Insight: The timetable has been set at 4-6 weeks, which could push Garland into late April. There's still plenty of season after that to keep him worthwhile, though, so eye Garland as an end-of-draft option. (RapidDraft.com)

Description: Jon Garland will start the season on the DL due to the oblique injury he suffered yesterday.

Insight: John Ely seems like the most likely replacement to us - he has had a strong spring. Garland isn't worth a pick in mixed leagues because of his low strikeout rate and the fact that he can't be used for the first few weeks when bench spots are very valuable.
