Description: Tigers reliever Bruce Rondon was demoted to Triple-A after Wednesday's game. He threw 15 fastballs between 99 and 101 mph in his appearance Wednesday but allowed two hits, walked two and gave up two runs in 1/3 innings.
Insight: "Right now he's just not ready for this," manager Jim Leyland said, according to USA Today. "When I say that, please don't think anybody's down on him. We think he's a future closer at the major league level. But I can't get him enough work right now."

Description: The Tigers have promoted RP Bruce Rondon from Triple-A Toledo to replace injured Octavio Dotel.
Insight: The closer's job was Rondon's to lose coming into the spring and he lost it. But the right-hander threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings at Toledo with nine strikeouts and just two walks. While we don't expect him to jump back into the closer's role, if he performs well that could happen down the road.

Description: The Tigers have demoted Bruce Rondon to Triple-A Toledo.
Insight: The closer job was Rondon's to lose coming into spring, and he lost it. The right-hander allowed 17 hits and nine walks in 12 1/3 innings. It's unclear who the Tigers will employ at closer early in the season, but the candidates are Joaquin Benoit, Octavio Dotel and Phil Coke.

Description: The Tigers are reportedly "pushing hard" to trade for a closer, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. Youngster Bruce Rondon has not pitched well this spring, with a 7.36 ERA and 2.73 WHIP. He's given up five hits and five walks in four outings (3.2 IP).
Insight: Rondon is a hard thrower who currently is struggling with his mechanics. He may be the long-term answer to Detroit's closer role, but it's clear he won't start the season there. The Tigers have Joaquin Benoit, Octavio Dotel and Phil Coke on their roster who can fill the role if they can't find a suitable trade partner.

Description: Tigers 22-year-old closer Bruce Rondon has not pitched well this spring, with a 7.36 ERA and 2.73 WHIP. He's given up five hits and five walks in four outings (3.2 IP).
Insight: Rondon is a hard thrower who currently is struggling with his mechanics. He may be the long-term answer to Detroit's closer role, but fantasy owners can not be sure he'll start the season there. The Tigers have Joaquin Benoit, Octavio Dotel and Phil Coke on their roster who can fill the role and Jose Valverde is still a free agent.

Description: Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that the closer spot is not 22-year-old Bruce Rondon's job to lose but that he will "look at all my options." SOURCE: FoxSportsDetroit.com
Insight: Leyland also said he doubts "anyone will be anointed the closer out of spring training." Rondon figures to be Leyland's best option, but the manager might also turn to Joaquin Benoit or Octavio Dotel.

Description: It appears that Detroit RP Bruce Rondon is still going to get the first shot to be the Tigers closer in 2013. Detroit has made no offseason acquisitions to change GM Dave Dombrowski's earlier statement indicating he would be the closer.
Insight: The Tigers do have Joaquin Benoit and Phil Coke as a backup plan in case the young flamethrower can't handle the job.
11/29/2012 8:26:00 PM
Description: Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told Detroit News' Lynn G. Henning that the team is not shopping for a closer. Detroit will give rookie Bruce Rondon "every shot" to win the job.
Insight: The Tigers would probably need a new closer even if Jose Valverde wasn't a free agent. Valverde always walked the tightrope, even during his 49-for-49 save season in 2011. That rope broke in 2012, as the right-hander blew five saves with a 3.78 ERA before allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings during the postseason.
