Description: Derek Lowe has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball. SOURCE: USA Today
Insight: The Rangers released Lowe earlier this season. The 40-year-old will finish his career with 176 wins in 681 games (377 starts). Lowe appeared in two All-Star games, both as a member of the Red Sox. In 2004, he became the first pitcher to win the decisive game of the Division Series, League Championship Series and the World Series in the same postseason.

Description: Texas righthander Derek Lowe has been designated for assignment.
Insight: The 38-year-old has given up 11 runs in his last five relief outings (18.56 ERA). He hasn't been a productive fantasy contributor since 2010 (16 wins, 4.00 ERA).
3/6/2013 8:02:00 PM
Description: Derek Lowe has signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers.
Insight: Lowe (9-11, 5.11 ERA) will likely be a long relief man and spot starter but he isn't considered a candidate for the No. 5 spot in the rotation. The last time Lowe had a ERA under 4.00 and any real fantasy value was in 2008.

Description: Free agent starting pitcher Derek Lowe is apparently close to signing a deal with the Texas Rangers, according Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Lowe (9-11, 5.11 ERA) will likely be a long relief man and spot starter. The last time Lowe had a ERA under 4.00 and any real fantasy value was in 2008.

Description: The Yankees have signed free agent starting pitcher Derek Lowe to a new contract. Lowe was released by the Indians on Friday.
Insight: Lowe (8-10, 5.52 ERA) will start in the pen but it's likely that he'll be promoted to the rotation at some point, especially now that ace CC Sabathia has been placed on the DL with elbow soreness.
8/10/2012 7:50:00 PM
Description: The Indians officially released righthander Derek Lowe on Friday.
Insight: Lowe (8-10, 5.52 ERA) struggled near the end of his tenure in Cleveland but he was great at the start of the season so he should find a new team relatively quickly now that he is a free agent.
8/2/2012 11:03:00 AM
Description: Righthanded starting pitcher Derek Lowe has been designated for assignment by the Indians.
Insight: Expectations weren't high for Lowe (8-10, 5.52 ERA) coming into the year after a dismal 2011 campaign in Atlanta (9-17, 5.05) but this move still comes as a bit of a surprise given how successful he was in the early part of the season (6-1, 2.05 ERA in his first seven starts). His awful outing Tuesday against the Royals (2.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ERs, 2 BBs) is probably what sealed his fate.
7/31/2012 9:28:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Derek Lowe gave up seven earned runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings Tuesday as his ERA rose to 5.52.
Insight: Lowe has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball since the end of May, completely undoing his 6-2, 2.15 ERA start. In his last 12 starts, Lowe has recorded an abysmal 8.80 ERA in 60 1/3 innings. He should be dropped immediately.
7/4/2012 8:27:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Derek Lowe won his first start since June 1 Wednesday against the Angels, but he didn't exactly blow Los Angeles away despite tossing a quality start.
Insight: Lowe (8-6, 4.43) did the minimum required for a quality start, but he also allowed 11 hits in his six innings of work. The right-hander started out 6-2 with a 2.15 ERA, but since then he's 2-4 with an 8.03 ERA and a 1.81 WHIP. Despite his recent struggles, Lowe is usually safe to start when he pitches at home, where he is 5-1 with a 2.86 ERA in eight starts.
6/18/2012 10:37:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Derek Lowe got hammered for 11 hits and seven runs in five innings of work Monday against the Reds.
Insight: Luckily for Lowe, the Indians still found a way to win the game, leaving the 39-year-old with just a no-decision. Lowe had a nice first couple of months but he has been fantasy poison in June. Lowe has given up seven runs or more in three of his last five starts and has lost four out of his last five decisions. Opponents are now hitting .313 against Lowe this season after his disastrous outing Monday.

Description: Hold off on streaming Indians starter Derek Lowe Wednesday at Cincinnati. Lowe, owned in 27 percent of Yahoo! leagues, has been a mess on the road this season.
Insight: Lowe has a 3-3 record, 6.48 ERA and 1.95 WHIP in six road starts. He's allowed 53 hits in 33 1/3 innings in his six road outings this season.
6/7/2012 4:17:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Derek Lowe allowed seven runs on nine hits in five innings against the Tigers Thursday.
Insight: Reality is starting to set in for Lowe. The right-hander started out 6-1 with a 2.05 ERA. That ERA has since skyrocketed to 3.72 as he has lost three of his last four starts. Lowe also dropped to 3-3 with a 6.48 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP on the road this season. He came in with a 7-2 record and a 1.87 ERA in his career against Detroit, so fantasy owners were likely looking to capitalize on that past success by streaming Lowe today. However, he's looking like someone you only want to use when he's pitching at home, where he is 4-1 with a 1.37 ERA in six starts.
6/6/2012 5:16:00 PM
Description: Derek Lowe will start Thursday at Detroit. The right-hander is owned in just 31 percent of Yahoo! leagues despite a 7-3 record and a 3.06 ERA.
Insight: Lowe hasn't been good on the road this season (3-2, 5.40 ERA) but hopefully his past success against the Tigers can offset that. In 29 games (10 starts) against Detroit, Lowe had gone 7-2 with a 1.87 ERA and an 0.87 WHIP.
5/26/2012 9:50:00 PM
Description: Derek Lowe got pounded Saturday in a 14-7 loss to the White Sox. The Cleveland righthander allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs in 2.1 innings.
Insight: It was Lowe's shortest outing of the season and it raised his season ERA by a full run (2.15 to 3.25). Lowe has lost two straight and seems to be slowly falling back to Earth after a hot start to the season.
5/20/2012 7:55:00 PM
Description: Derek Lowe turned in another solid effort on Sunday, tossing six innings of six-hit, two-run ball against the Marlins. Cleveland wasn't able to provide him with much run support however, as Lowe took his second loss of the season.
Insight: He's 6-2 now with an elite 2.15 ERA but there are a few red flags here that should be addressed. In nine starts, Lowe has only recorded 15 strikeouts while allowing 18 walks. Plus his WHIP is 1.41 and opponents are batting .285 against him. The win/loss mark and his low ERA are both positives but other than that, Lowe isn't bringing a whole lot to the table.
5/15/2012 7:47:00 PM
Description: Derek Lowe's impressive season continued Tuesday against the Twins. Lowe pitched all nine innings for Cleveland, allowing six hits and no runs. He walked four and didn't record a strikeout.
Insight: It was Lowe's first nine-inning shutout since August 31, 2005, when he one-hit the Cubs. Lowe was a disaster for the Braves last season (9-17, 5.05 ERA) but he seems to have completely reinvented himself as a member of the Indians (6-1, 2.05). Of course it's very early in the season, but he has to be in the Cy Young conversation right now.
4/29/2012 8:00:00 PM
Description: Derek Lowe was almost untouchable Sunday afternoon against the Angels. He went 7 2/3 innings while allowing just three hits in Cleveland's 4-0 win.
Insight: Lowe only struck out one hitter, but then again, he has always pitched to contact. The difference between the 38-year-old's performance this season (4-1, 2.27 ERA) compared to what he did last year (9-17, 5.05) has been night and day.
4/24/2012 9:58:00 PM
Description: Indians pitcher Derek Lowe gave up one run on eight hits in six innings on Tuesday against Kansas City.
Insight: Lowe became the latest pitcher to take advantage of the Royals, who came into Tuesday having lost 11 in a row. The righty did what he does best: induce ground balls. His ground ball to fly ball ratio was 13-3 on Tuesday. Lowe has three quality starts in four outings for Cleveland this year, and his style of pitching makes him a safe play against most offenses.
5/7/2011 7:14:00 AM
Description: Braves pitcher Derek Lowe has limped off the mound with a blister on his right foot after allowing his first two hits in the seventh inning against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Lowe took a no-hitter into the seventh Friday night and got two strikes against Shane Victorino to start the inning before trotting off the mound toward center field, apparently trying to shake off the blister. Victorino broke up the no-hit bid with a single to left on the next pitch.
SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: Lowe was excellent, allowing just 3 base runners in his 6 innings, striking out 4. He has 41 K's against just 14 walks on the season, with a 3.22 ERA, and he is worth using as a #5/6 SP in mixed leagues.
3/31/2011 4:36:00 PM
Description: Braves SP Derek Lowe worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings, picking up the win in Atlanta's 2-0 victory over Washington. Lowe allowed 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 6.
Insight: Lowe is best used in NL-only leagues but in an extended scoring period with solid match-ups, like during the first scoring period of fantasy, he is worth a flier in mixed leagues.
