Description: Lefthanded reliever Matt Thornton and the Yankees have agreed on a two-year pact. SOURCE: Jack Curry, YES
Insight: The deal is worth $7 million. The once dominant setup man struggled to an 0-4 record last season and wasn't even good enough to crack Boston's postseason roster. He won't have any use to fantasy owners in 2014.

Description: The White Sox have traded reliever Matt Thornton to the Red Sox. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: And all Boston had to give up was Double-A outfielder Brandon Jacobs. With Andrew Miller out for the season, the Red Sox needed a lefthander out of the pen and they couldn't have done much better than Thornton. Though his ERA is probably a little higher than it should be (3.86 in 28 innings this year), the 36-year-old has been lights out against lefties (.173 AVG in 52 at bats).

Description: White Sox reliever Matt Thornton's MRI revealed inflammation in his left elbow. SOURCE: Dan Hayes, CSNChicago.com
Insight: The good news is that Thornton doesn't have structural damage. The hard-throwing left-hander went 4-10 with a 3.45 ERA, three saves and 26 holds last season. He would be one of the options considered if incumbent closer Addison Reed falters.

Description: Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura recently was quoted as saying Matt Thornton and Jesse Crain are the team's "best options" (for closing) and Crain is out with an oblique injury.
SOURCE: Chicago Sun-Times
Insight: Thornton is the likely Opening Day closer for Robin Ventura's club and gets a weak vote as a late fantasy selection. Unfortunately, the White Sox have a young guy, Addison Reed, who is their best option down the road, maybe even late this season, therefore Thornton's shelf life is limited.
4/12/2011 9:04:00 AM
Description: White Sox RP Matt Thornton blew his third game of the season, allowing a run in just 1/3 of an inning of work against the A's.
Insight: Manager Ozzie Guillen already indicated he would go with a closer "by situation" for the White Sox pen. Jesse Crain also allowed a run to take the loss so expect Chris Sale to get the bulk of the save chances if Thornton is replaced.
4/10/2011 8:51:00 PM
Description: The White Sox planned to use Matt Thornton as the full-time closer during spring training. But after two blown saves in three appearances, manager Ozzie Guillen is now saying he'll give the ninth-inning duties to whichever pitcher is best suited to the situation.
Insight: The White Sox have some quality arms in the bullpen and if you are going to gamble on someone other than Thornton then bet on Chris Sale.
3/19/2011 7:23:00 PM
Description: The Chicago White Sox have named Matt Thornton as their Opening Day closer.
Insight: The White Sox should be competitive in 2011 and, if he keeps the job all season, Thornton should post 30+ saves. He is a good #2 closer in mixed leagues.
3/17/2011 5:10:00 AM
Description: Ozzie Guillen said that Matt Thornton has first dibs on the closer job.
SOURCE: PETER GAMMONS
Insight: This is what we expected all along. And we don't think he will lose the job this season. Project him for 30-35 saves and know that he could get more.
3/17/2011 1:01:00 AM
Description: MLB.com's Peter Gammons reports that Thornton will open the year as the White Sox's closer.
Insight: The move has been expected all along, though the team opened the competition to Chris Sale this spring. Thornton has been terrific as a setup man, so there's no reason to expect him to falter in his new role. (RapidDraft.com)
3/15/2011 5:49:00 AM
Description: Chris Sale allowed three runs in an inning of work yesterday.
Insight: His spring ERA is 7.36. We have a hard time believing that the White Sox will turn the closer job over to a rookie with those numbers. Expect it to be Matt Thornton at the back end.
3/6/2011 12:41:00 PM
Description: Matt Thornton agreed to a two-year, $12 million extension today.
Insight: That's closer money folks! The White Sox are likely to turn the ninth inning over to Thornton and we believe he has the skills to handle the job.
2/17/2011 7:24:00 PM
Description: Chris Sale will be in the White Sox bullpen, not their rotation. However, Ozzie Guillen would prefer to use Matt Thornton as the closer.
SOURCE: CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Insight: We like the way Ozzie is thinking. Thornton has plenty of potential to be an excellent closer if given the opportunity this season.
2/3/2011 2:01:00 PM
Description: Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports Thornton is the early favorite to be the White Sox closer this season.
Insight: Thornton had a 2.61 ERA and 81 strikeouts over 60.2 innings in 2010, so he seems to be well-suited to being a closer. (RapidDraft.com)
1/20/2011 7:15:00 PM
Description: The White Sox plan to have a full-time closer, likely either Matt Thornton or Chris Sale.
SOURCE: CHICAGO BREAKING SPORTS
Insight: Both players are boom or bust picks for early drafts. A few local reporters believe that the White Sox prefer Sale but we think Thornton's experience could win out in the end.
12/2/2010 7:05:00 PM
Description: Chuck Garifen of CSN Chicago reports Thornton could open 2011 as the White Sox closer.
Insight: The White Sox have non-tendered Bobby Jenks and are not expected to re-sign him. Thornton had a 2.61 ERA and 81 strikeouts over 60.2 innings this past season. (RapidDraft.com)
10/26/2010 3:02:00 PM
Description: AOL Fanhouse reports the White Sox have picked up Thornton's $3 million option for 2011.
Insight: Thornton had a 2.67 ERA and 81 strikeouts over 60.2 inning this season, so he should continue to have a significant late-inning role in the White Sox bullpen and be one of the best setup men in baseball. (RapidDraft.com)
9/3/2010 4:05:00 PM
Description: The White Sox have activated Thornton (forearm) from the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Thornton will step right back into a key late-inning role in the White Sox bullpen. (RapidDraft.com)
9/2/2010 11:15:00 AM
Description: Matt Thornton threw a bullpen session Wednesday and he should come off the disabled list before Friday's game.
SOURCE: Chicago Tribune
Insight: He can be a great reliever, but he has just been good this year. If Bobby Jenks continues to struggle, he can become the closer, but his value is minimal at best.
9/1/2010 3:03:00 PM
Description: The Chicago Sun Times reports Thornton (forearm) declared himself ready to return from the disabled list after completing a simulated game on Wednesday.
Insight: Thornton may return to the White Sox bullpen on Friday. (Rapid Draft.com)
8/30/2010 11:01:00 AM
Description: The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports Thornton (forearm) played some light catch on Sunday.
Insight: Thornton is reportedly aiming to return this Friday when the White Sox take on the Red Sox. (SportsBuff.com)
