Description: Joe Blanton has lost his place in the Angels' starting rotation. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times
Insight: This was bound to happen sooner or later. Blanton has been arguably the worst pitcher in the major leagues this season, compiling a brutal 2-13 record in 20 appearances. Garrett Richards will move into the rotation.
6/29/2013 9:55:00 PM
Description: Blanton was 1-10 with a 5.87 ERA after his start on June 9, but he has thrown three straight quality starts and won his first game since May 23 Saturday.
Insight: Blanton (2-10, 5.07 ERA) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out six over seven innings Saturday against Houston. The right-hander had a .370 BABIP over his first 13 starts this season and allowed 111 hits in 76 2/3 innings during that span, but he has allowed just 15 hits while posting a BABIP below .250. A little luck can go a long way.

Description: Angels right-hander Joe Blanton struck out 11 batters and allowed six hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings Tuesday against Seattle.
Insight: Blanton is 1-10 with a 5.62 ERA and has no fantasy value right now, but that could change if he starts to have better luck. He has a .366 BABIP even though his line-drive rate is only slightly below average.
6/9/2013 6:40:00 PM
Description: Angels right-hander Joe Blanton allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in five innings Sunday against Boston. He served up three homers.
Insight: Blanton has been one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball this season and is now 1-10 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. It's astounding the Angels have allowed him to throw 76 2/3 innings.
12/5/2012 10:18:00 PM
Description: Starting pitcher Joe Blanton and the Angels have agreed to terms on a two-year, $15 million contract according to Jon Heyman from CBS Sports.
Insight: It looks like the Angels are trying to move on from Zack Greinke. The Blanton signing comes on the heels of a trade for righthander Tommy Hanson (the Angels gave Atlanta reliever Jordan Walden in exchange). With Ervin Santana in Kansas City and Dan Haren pitching for the Nationals now, the Los Angeles starting rotation will have a very different look in 2013.
8/3/2012 4:55:00 PM
Description: The Phillies traded starting pitcher Joe Blanton to the Dodgers Friday for cash and a player to be named later.
Insight: Philadelphia had been in talks with the Orioles about a Blanton deal before the trade deadline but in the end, shipping him to Los Angeles made more sense. Blanton (8-9, 4.59 ERA) should see some time in the Dodgers' rotation while Ted Lilly (5-1, 3.14) continues to rehab from a shoulder injury.
6/14/2012 11:07:00 PM
Description: Phillies starter Joe Blanton allowed one run on seven hits in a complete game effort Thursday at Minnesota. Blanton walked none and struck out seven.
Insight: Blanton (6-6, 4.93 ERA) had allowed five earned runs or more in five straight starts and came in with a 6.38 ERA in seven road appearances this season, so this really speaks more about Minnesota's offensive issues than it does about Blanton's ability to dominate.
6/13/2012 8:29:00 PM
Description: Phillies starter Joe Blanton has allowed at least five earned runs in each of his last five starts. He'll start tomorrow at Minnesota, a weak hitting club, but those thinking of streaming Blanton expecting him to reverse the trend should think again.
Insight: Blanton's ERA has skyrocketed from 2.96 to 5.40 over his last five outings. On the road, Blanton is 2-4 with a 6.38 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in seven appearances (six starts). At home, he's 3-2 with a 4.46 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, so he really shouldn't be started anywhere, but especially not away from home.
5/29/2012 10:48:00 PM
Description: Phillies starter Joe Blanton allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings against the Mets on Tuesday to fall to 4-5.
Insight: Blanton has allowed six earned runs or more in three straight starts. The Phillies have to rely on Blanton now that Roy Halladay, but fortunately fantasy owners don't have that issue. It's time to drop the right-hander.
5/19/2012 10:48:00 PM
Description: Joe Blanton surrendered four home runs against the Red Sox on Saturday. Blanton gave up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Insight: Blanton's ERA was due for a correction. He came into Saturday with a 4-3 record, a 2.96 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP, but Blanton owners should've saw this coming -- the Red Sox own the former Athletics SP, touching him up for 38 earned runs in 11 career starts (5.20 ERA). The plus with Blanton is that he won't walk a lot of batters, which should keep his WHIP down.
5/3/2012 4:05:00 PM
Description: Joe Blanton tossed a three-hit shutout with no walks and six strikeouts on Thursday afternoon against the Braves.
Insight: Blanton is the forgotten man in the Phillies rotation, although that lack of recognition was warranted based on his 5.01 ERA in 2011 and 4.82 ERA in 2010. This year, Blanton has pitched like its 2005, throwing four quality starts in five turns, and walking just three batters in 35 innings.
5/23/2011 8:02:00 AM
Description: Phillies SP Joe Blanton is back on the DL with right elbow inflammation, though an MRI showed no structural damage.
Insight: Because this is the second time Blanton has had issues with the elbow, expect the Phillies to be more careful with him. The move might be retroactive to May 16th but do not be surprised of he misses more than the 2-3 starts he would miss because of the DL stay.
4/28/2011 8:21:00 PM
Description: The Philadelphia Phillies have put right-hander Joe Blanton on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury.
Insight: Blanton has an elbow impingement and the Phillies have not listed a timetable for his return.
4/19/2011 6:44:00 AM
Description: Phillies SP Joe Blanton allowed 2 runs over 7 innings but took the no decision in yesterday's loss against Milwaukee. Blanton gave up 7 hits and a walk while striking out 4.
Insight: Blanton has struggled in 2011, limiting his value to NL-only leagues. If he continues to pitch like this he could develop into a match-ups guy in mixed leagues.
4/12/2011 8:34:00 PM
Description: Phillies SP Joe Blanton allowed 5 runs against Washington tonight, giving up 7 hits and a walk in 6 innings of work; he struck out 4.
Insight: Blanton is off to a rough start and is only serviceable in NL-only leagues right now.
2/27/2011 6:45:00 PM
Description: Joe Blanton threw three scoreless innings against the Yankees today.
Insight: He will be overlooked this year because of a bad 2010 season and the other big name pitchers in Philly but if Blanton he healthy he could be useful as the Phillies fifth starter this season.
1/19/2011 12:18:00 PM
Description: "I don't feel comfortable doing it," Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said in response to trading SP Joe Blanton. "He's going to pitch for the Phillies, probably for the entire season."
SOURCE: Fox Sports
Insight: The reason Amaro does not feel comfortable doing it is because the Phillies would have to eat a good chunk of Blanton's salary. Expect Blanton trade talks to heat up when other teams have injuries to their starting pitchers.
12/14/2010 12:22:00 PM
Description: The Phillies are now looking to deal SP Joe Blanton to free up salary to add some offensive players.
SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick via Twitter
Insight: There are not many free agent starting pitchers worth pursuing. Blanton is an innings eater and could draw interest from a few clubs.
12/14/2010 12:03:00 PM
Description: Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse reports the Brewers have expressed interest in Blanton.
Insight: Blanton posted a 4.82 ERA with the Phillies in 2010, and is due $17 million over the remainder of his contract. (RapidDraft.com)
12/14/2010 6:31:00 AM
Description: The Phillies are expected to try to trade Joe Blanton to free up some salary after signing Cliff Lee.
Insight: The Phillies might have to eat some money since teams know they need to trade him but they are still likely to find a taker for Blanton. He didn't have a good 2010 season but teams are always in the market for a pretty durable innings eater.
