Description: Boston outfielder Ryan Kalish is headed for surgery on his right shoulder. The operation will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum sometime next week. SOURCE: Ian Browne, MLB.com
Insight: He'll miss the start of the year and it wouldn't be surprising if the injury drags on until mid-season. Kalish hit just .229 in 36 games for the Red Sox in 2012 and wasn't expected to play a big role in 2013 regardless of his health.

Description: Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and will take the place of injured outfielder Ryan Sweeney on Boston's active 25-man roster.
Insight: Kalish has been sidelined for most of the last year with neck and shoulder injuries but now he is finally 100 percent healthy. He had a very successful nine-game rehab stint in Pawtucket (.378, 4 HRs, 10 RBIs) and should be ready to contribute at the major league level right away. Kalish batted .253 with 4 HRs and 24 RBIs in 53 games for the Red Sox in 2010.

Description: Boston outfielder Ryan Kalish has reached base in nine out of first 10 plate appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket, going 4-for-5 with two homers, four RBIs, four walks and five runs scored in two games.
Insight: Kalish is on the comeback trail from left shoulder surgery and a neck injury that kept him out for a year. Kalish was once considered one of the Red Sox organization's best prospects. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said there still isn't a timetable for his return to the major league club, according to the Providence Journal, but if he continues to hit like this it's only a matter of time before the injury-riddled Red Sox are forced to make the move. The outfielder is still just 24 years old and is a tremendous athlete, so he would be someone to target if he were to get regular playing time with Boston.
