Description: Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated after Thursday's game that he plans to go with a closer by committee for the rest of the season.
Insight: Casilla earned his 12th save of the season on Thursday, but Bochy said he nearly used Casilla in the eighth and considered taking him out in the ninth after he issued a leadoff walk. Casilla has just one blown save since taking over the closer role, but he has allowed five runs in his last 11 appearances. Sergio Romo, Jeremy Affledt and Casilla could all get save opportunities. has locked down the closer role since he replaced Sergio Romo in late June. He's thrown 9 1/3 innings, struck out nine, allowed one run on five hits and gone 8-for-8 in save chances since he took the job.

Description: Giants reliever Santiago Casilla has been activated from the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Casilla (1-1, 1.37 ERA) missed a few weeks with a strained hamstring. Though Casilla is usually San Francisco's setup man, he could get a chance to close if Sergio Romo (3-3, 5.08 ERA) continues to struggle.

Insight: He's out with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. That makes it slightly more severe than the Grade 1 strain teammate Matt Cain was diagnosed with earlier this week. Either way, Casilla (1-1, 1.37 ERA, eight holds) doesn't have much fantasy appeal.

Description: Giants GM Brian Sabean said Thursday that he expects reliever Santiago Casilla to undergo surgery to remove the cyst from his right knee, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Insight: Casilla (3-2, 1.89 ERA) was placed on the DL several days ago after making just two appearances since May 8 due to soreness from the cyst. The expected surgery would not be a major one.

Description: Giants reliever Santiago Casilla has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a cyst on his right knee.
Insight: Casilla (3-2, 1.89 ERA) has made just two appearances since May 8, and the pain apparently isn't subsiding.

Description: Giants reliever Santiago Casilla (knee) is expected to be available out of the bullpen Wednesday, according to Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com.
Insight: Casilla has been dealing with a cyst on his right knee and hasn't pitched since May 8.

Insight: Casilla tweaked something Wednesday in a win against the Phillies. He only matters in fantasy leagues that keep track of holds.

Description: The Giants have re-signed reliever Santiago Casilla to a three-year contract extension. SOURCE: Henry Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Casilla stepped in and saved 25 games with a 2.84 ERA after Brian Wilson had to have Tommy John surgery last season. However, he lost the closer job to Sergio Romo in the second half and shouldn't carry much fantasy value next year.

Description: Santiago Casilla's knee has healed and he will be available to close the game Thursday if the Giants have a lead going into the ninth inning. Casilla hasn't pitched for San Francisco since last Friday.
Insight: Casilla (1.54 ERA, 14 saves) has done great since taking over for Brian Wilson as the team's closer in mid-April. Expect him to pick up right where he left off if he gets a chance Thursday against the Padres.

6/2/2012 5:48:00 PM
Description: Santiago Casilla is listed as day-to-day with a bruised right knee, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Casilla tied for the major league lead in saves with 10 in the month of May. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the news that Casilla only has a bruised tibia is "pretty good news for us." Bochy is hopeful that Casilla will be available Sunday. He said he'll use Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez, depending on the matchup, if a save chance should arise on Saturday. He also mentioned Clay Hensley and Jeremy Affeldt, so don't get tied to any particular Giants reliever should Casilla go down for an extended period.

Description: Santiago Casilla picked up his second save of the season on Thursday afternoon against the Reds.
Insight: Angel Pagan hit a three-run blast off of Sean Marshall in the top of the ninth to give the Giants a 6-5 lead, and Casilla closed it out with three straight strikeouts. He has a loose grip on the San Francisco closer job, but performances like Thursday's allow that grip to tighten just a bit.

4/20/2012 10:50:00 PM
Description: Giants manager Bruce Bochy had a quick hook with Santiago Casilla on Friday. The righty allowed a leadoff infield single to Jason Bay in the ninth and was immediately removed for Javier Lopez with three lefties coming up. Lopez promptly blew the 3-2 lead, although the run was charged to Casilla.
Insight: It looks like Bochy is going to play the matchups in San Francisco with Brian Wilson out, which will take some save opportunities away from Casilla.

4/17/2012 9:46:00 PM
Description: With Brian Wilson out for the season and likely to undergo Tommy John surgery, Bruce Bochy has hinted that at least initially, the Giants will use Santiago Casilla in the closer's role.
Insight: It didn't take Bochy long to abandon his closer-by-committee strategy. Casilla had six saves last season for San Francisco, so closing out games isn't completely new to him.

4/15/2012 2:09:00 PM
Description: Santiago Casilla is expected to get the majority of save opportunities for the Giants while Brian Wilson deals with an elbow injury.
Insight: Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez could see some save chances as well but for now, Casilla appears to be the favorite for the closer's job now that it appears Brian Wilson will be out for the season.

Description: For the third straight time, Casilla gave up a run when called from the A's bullpen. He allowed an Evan Longoria homer and only recorded one out.
Insight: Casilla has only appeared in two games this month and has given up four runs. A demotion or disablement may be in the near future for the former Jairo Garcia. (SportsBuff.com)

Steady5/16/2009 9:36:00 AM
Description: Casilla returned from the DL and pitched a scoreless eighth inning in a low pressure situation (the A's were losing 13-1).
Insight: Casilla missed the last two weeks with a sprained knee. Prior to his injury, he had been pitching effectively. With the A's bullpen, Casilla could get a save opportunity or two. (SportsBuff.com)

Steady1/26/2009 4:57:00 PM
Description: Casilla has nice strikeout potential for a middle reliever, but allows too many base runners to figure into the A's closer situation.
Insight: Casilla did not allow a run in 2008 until May 10, but revealed his true self after that. He struck out 43 batters in 50.1 innings, but missed part of June with elbow trouble. He could be useful in AL-only leagues. (SportsBuff.com)
