Description: It looks like San Diego starter Jason Marquis is headed for Tommy John surgery. SOURCE: Corey Brock, MLB.com
Insight: Manager Bud Black called the damage to Marquis' ulnar collateral ligament "significant." If Marquis opts for surgery he could miss most or all of the 2014 campaign.
6/16/2013 9:47:00 AM
Description: Padres starter Jason Marquis is 9-2 with a 3.63 ERA this season.
Insight: That's a shocker. The right-hander came into this season having won just 18 games with a 5.15 ERA with three different organizations over three seasons since going 15-13 in 2009 with Colorado. The right-hander is 42-54 with a 4.85 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP after the All-Star break in his career, compared to 79-57 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP before it, so this won't last much longer. Marquis' FIP is more than two runs higher than his ERA at 5.78.
5/8/2013 7:08:00 PM
Description: Padres starter Jason Marquis has thrown three straight quality starts.
Insight: He shut out the Marlins on five hits over eight innings in his latest start Wednesday. Marquis only has a 26/20 K/BB in 44 innings, but he can be used in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues in the right matchups.
12/3/2012 11:39:00 AM
Description: Starting pitcher Jason Marquis re-signed with the Padres Monday for one year and $3 million.
Insight: Marquis started pitching much better after he came to San Diego last season (4.04 ERA in 15 starts compared to 8.47 earlier in the year with Minnesota) but he's still not much of a fantasy option.
8/23/2012 9:14:00 PM
Description: San Diego starter Jason Marquis was moved to the disabled list Thursday because of a broken left wrist.
Insight: Marquis (8-11, 5.22 ERA) was injured after getting hit by a comebacker in his last start Tuesday against the Pirates. Luckily for the Padres, it's Marquis' non-throwing hand so he should be back before the end of the season.
8/11/2012 10:11:00 PM
Description: Padres righty Jason Marquis collected his fifth career shutout Saturday in a win against Pittsburgh.
Insight: Marquis struck out four while giving up just two hits and one walk. He's now 6-6 with a 3.66 ERA since signing with the Padres back in late May.
7/25/2012 8:12:00 PM
Description: San Diego starter Jason Marquis has found success with the Padres after washing out with Minnesota. In 10 starts with San Diego, Marquis has gone 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and an impressive 56/17 K/BB ratio in 62 innings.
Insight: The right-hander struck out eight in 7 1/3 three-hit innings Wednesday at San Francisco. We wouldn't recommend Marquis as a long-term answer, but he's good enough to use for a spot start, especially when he's pitching at home or against an NL West opponent.
6/29/2012 11:02:00 PM
Description: San Diego's Jason Marquis returned to Colorado, where he won 15 games in 2009, for a start Friday, but things didn't go too well for the right-hander. Marquis gave up five earned runs in six innings.
Insight: The 33-year-old Marquis put together stellar efforts in his first two outings with San Diego, but both of those starts came at Petco Park.
6/7/2012 7:23:00 PM
Description: San Diego's Jason Marquis allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits in six innings in his first start with the team Thursday against San Francisco.
Insight: The 33-year-old Marquis went 2-4 with an 8.47 ERA and 1.94 WHIP in seven starts with Minnesota before getting his pink slip. Marquis went 8-5 with a solid 3.95 ERA in 20 starts with Washington last season before moving on to Arizona and posting a 9.53 ERA in three starts. He also had a 6.60 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 13 starts with the Nationals in 2010, so there's no guarantee that moving back to the National League is going to boost his fantasy value.
6/3/2012 2:55:00 PM
Description: Jason Marquis could be called upon to start Saturday when San Diego takes on Milwaukee.
Insight: Right now Marquis is pitching for Double-A San Antonio and given how he's performed in the majors this year (2-4, 8.47 ERA in seven starts), that's probably where he belongs. Even if he does get promoted, you're better off leaving Marquis on the waiver wire.
5/28/2012 9:15:00 PM
Description: Jason Marquis has cleared waivers and is now a free agent. He was designated for assignment by Minnesota last week.
Insight: Now that Marquis (2-4, 8.47 ERA) is officially without a team, there is absolutely no reason for fantasy owners to hold onto him anymore ... not that there was much reason to hold onto him in the first place.
5/22/2012 11:59:00 AM
Description: Jason Marquis, who got crushed Sunday in Minnesota's 16-4 loss to the Brewers, was designated for assignment.
Insight: Marquis has always carried a high WHIP, but managed to win double-digit games from 2004-09. He hasn't had much fantasy value since then and his assignment likely won't effect many fantasy rosters.
5/20/2012 7:35:00 PM
Description: Jason Marquis got crushed Sunday in Minnesota's 16-4 loss to the Brewers. The 33-year-old righthander lasted only 1.2 innings, allowing eight hits and eight earned runs before exiting.
Insight: Marquis' ERA sits at 8.47 for the season and if you're smart, you won't let him anywhere near your fantasy team in 2012.
4/15/2012 2:18:00 PM
Description: Jason Marquis will make his first start of 2012 Wednesday night against the Yankees.
Insight: Marquis has been a bit of a journeyman in recent years (the Twins are the fifth different team he has played for in five seasons) but his sinker still works and he can eat up innings when he's healthy. Still, the Twins probably won't provide him with much run support and Marquis has never been a big strikeout guy so don't expect Marquis to be a dominant force in fantasy this year.
4/4/2012 2:05:00 PM
Description: Twins starter Jason Marquis was sent down to Triple A Rochester to get a few starts after missing time so that he could spent time with his daughter who was hurt in a serious bicycle accident.
Insight: Marquis, who was 8-6 with a 4.43 ERA in 2011, should require three or four starts at Rochester and then return to the big club.
3/29/2012 4:33:00 PM
Description: Jason Marquis could be placed on Minnesota's bereavment list. Marquis is away from the team right now while he tends to his daughter, who was hurt in a serious bicycle accident.
Insight: Our thoughts are with Marquis as he and his family go through this difficult time. Marquis, who was 8-6 with a 4.43 ERA in 2011, might miss his first scheduled start of the season.
5/4/2011 8:25:00 PM
Description: Jason Marquis was gave up ten runs and allowed six runs over five innings against the Phillies.
Insight: It was really only a matter of time before he came back to earth. He is a very mediocre pitcher that should be avoided in all formats.
9/29/2010 1:03:00 AM
Description: Marquis allowed one run on seven hits over six innings on Tuesday against the Phillies. He walked one and struck out seven.
Insight: Marquis had his second straight quality start but no win to show for it. He did not factor into the decision and remains at 2-9 with a 6.60 ERA. (RapidDraft.com)
9/18/2010 8:03:00 AM
Description: Marquis allowed six runs on six hits over only one third of an inning on Friday against the Phillies. He walked one and did not strike out a batter.
Insight: Marquis could not get out of the first inning as he fell to 2-9 with a 7.71 ERA. (RapidDraft.com)
9/17/2010 7:55:00 PM
Description: Jason Marquis was pulled tonight after giving up six runs while getting just one out.
Insight: He has had a couple decent starts in September but his career track record shows us that he isn't worth the gamble for any owners.
