Insight: Richard has been struggling with pain his left AC joint, which is similar to the injury that landed Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz on the DL a few days ago. The Padres haven't announced who will take Richard's spot in the rotation Wednesday against the Phillies.

Insight: Richard lost 12 pounds since battling flu-like symptoms in April, according to manager Bud Black. Perhaps that explains why he has allowed 37 hits and 25 earned runs in 26 1/3 innings this season. Tyson Ross has been activated, but he will serve as a reliver since he cannot currently swing a bat due to the partial dislocation of his left shoulder that he suffered last month. San Diego will go with a four-man rotation for the next week.

Insight: Now the two sides won't have to go to arbitration. Richard put together a solid 3.99 ERA last season but that was obviously aided by the pitcher-friendly conditions at Petco Park (8-5, 3.02 ERA at Petco, 6-9, 4.74 everywhere else).

Description: Padres starter Clayton Richard may be just 5-7 with a 3.95 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, but he's been masterful in his last three outings, all wins.
Insight: Richard's last three starts have totaled 21 1/3 IP with a 1.69 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. He's faced Seattle twice and Oakland once, so the numbers may be a bit skewed, but he's certainly pitching better than his overall numbers and could be a useful fantasy starter.

Insight: Richard (4-7, 3.94) has allowed just one run on 13 hits in 14 2/3 innings over his last two starts, including one against Seattle on June 12. Richard is 2-3 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in six home starts this season, and 13-14 with a 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and .219 BAA in 37 career starts at Petco Park. The lefty has also dominated Seattle in five career starts, going 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.

Insight: This start followed up a complete game shutout earlier in the week. Richard isn't a great option for his final start - at San Francisco against Matt Cain.
