Insight: Hanrahan, who has been slowly recovering from Tommy John surgery, has followed a strength-building program for the last few weeks, but still was experiencing arm weakness at times. The Tigers won't rush Hanrahan back, but when he does return he could become a helpful piece in Detroit's bullpen.

Description: According to Mike Dillon from Reynolds Sports, Boston righthander Joel Hanrahan had successful Tommy John surgery on Thursday.
Insight: Obviously, he won't be returning in 2013. Andrew Bailey is on the DL as well, which means that Junichi Tazawa will be handling the ninth inning for the Red Sox until further notice.

Description: Boston reliever Joel Hanrahan has opted for season-ending surgery on his right elbow.
Insight: This has Tommy John written all over it. It's likely that Hanrahan has played his last game with the Red Sox. Description: Boston closer Joel Hanrahan (forearm) has damage to his flexor tendon, which protects the UCL in his elbow. He has to decide between rest and rehab or season-ending surgery, according to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal.
Insight: Hanrahan was moved to the 60-day DL yesterday and can be dropped in all leagues. Junichi Tazawa will serve as the closer since Andrew Bailey (biceps) is also on the DL.

Description: Boston closer Joel Hanrahan (forearm) has been moved to the 60-day DL.
Insight: Hanrahan was placed on the 15-day DL just two days ago, so this move should tell fantasy owners that his injury is serious. Forearm strains sometimes can be indicative of an elbow problem, which is why Hanrahan will see Dr. James Andrews. Junichi Tazawa will serve as the closer since Andrew Bailey (biceps) is also on the DL.

Description: Boston closer Joel Hanrahan (forearm) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Both Hanrahan and Andrew Bailey (biceps) are on the DL, leaving Junichi Tazawa to handle save chances. Neither player has a timetable for a return.

Description: Boston closer Joel Hanrahan had to leave Monday night's game against Minnesota because of tightness in his right forearm.
Insight: Hanrahan had surrendered a game-tying solo home run to Brian Dozier just a couple batters earlier. The injury could mean another trip to the disabled list. The Red Sox other closer option, Andrew Bailey, is already sidelined. Boston could use Koji Uehara in the role or bring up Alfredo Aceves from Pawtucket.

Description: Red Sox reliever Joel Hanrahan was called upon for a save chance Thursday against Toronto and he locked down the win.
Insight: Andrew Bailey hasn't pitched since April 28, so it's unusual that Hanrahan got this chance. Bailey was supposed to remain the closer following Hanrahan's activation from the DL on April 30.
4/30/2013 2:15:00 PM
Description: Red Sox reliever Joel Hanrahan has been activated from the disabled list. That's the good news. The bad news is that it appears Andrew Bailey will keep the closer's role for now.
Insight: Hanrahan (hamstring) is 1-0 with a 11.57 ERA and 2.357 WHIP in six appearances. Bailey has been nearly perfect of late and Red Sox manager John Farrell has indicated he's going with the hot hand.

Insight: Hanrahan (hamstring) got blasted in his lone inning of work Friday night against Columbus (2 H, 2 ER). He'll probably have to settle for a setup role upon his return though Hanrahan could have a chance to close again should Andrew Bailey falter.

4/17/2013 7:55:00 PM
Description: According to a Boston Herald report, Red Sox manager John Farrell hasn't decided what Joel Hanrahan's role will be when he returns from the disabled list.
Insight: Hanrahan, who is on the DL because of a hamstring issue, has been flat out awful this season (0-1, 11.57 ERA). If Andrew Bailey (1-0, 1.69 ERA, one blown save) pitches well during his absence it's possible that Farrell could just stick with him as the closer.
4/16/2013 2:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to April 14 due to a right hamstring injury.
Insight: This would explain why Hanrahan has struggled over the last week. Andrew Bailey, who blew a save opportunity on Patriots' Day, should now get a few more chances to show he can get the job done. In Oakland he averaged 25 saves a season.

Description: According to MassLive.com, Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan's mechanics have been affected by a right hamstring injury.
Insight: That would explain why Hanrahan has struggled over the last week. If Hanrahan winds up on the DL, Andrew Bailey would be the one to take his place in the ninth inning.
4/13/2013 7:25:00 PM
Description: Joel Hanrahan has turned in two rough outings in a row. Saturday, the Boston closer walked two hitters without getting an out.
Insight: Koji Uehara came in and got Hanrahan out of the jam. Despite his recent struggles (6 ER in his last inning and two thirds), Boston skipper John Farrell says that Hanrahan is still the team's closer. If Hanrahan continues to implode, Andrew Bailey could get some chances in the ninth inning.
4/10/2013 11:09:00 PM
Description: Joel Hanrahan's night was a disaster. The Boston closer allowed five runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning Wednesday night against Baltimore.
Insight: Manager John Farrell finally pulled him after he gave up a three-run bomb to Manny Machado with two outs in the ninth. It was Hanrahan's first blown save as a member of the Red Sox. He's certainly had a tough series (he gave up a home run before getting the save on Monday) but Hanrahan isn't in any danger of losing his job.
