GAME NOTES: Doug Wojcik will make his debut as head coach at the College of Charleston as the Cougars host the Towson Tigers at TD Arena for their season opener.
Wojcik is following in the footsteps of John Kresse and Bobby Cremins by taking over at the College of Charleston. He spent the last seven seasons at Tulsa where he became the winningest head coach in program history with 140 wins. Wojcik was fired after failing to lead the Golden Hurricane to postseason tournaments the past two seasons. He has inherited a Cougars squad that went 19-12 in 2011-2012.
Second-year head coach Pat Skerry will be in charge of the Towson bench yet again. The Tigers struggled tremendously in his inaugural year with the team, finishing 1-31 with an 18.2 point per game average margin of loss. Towson produced an 87-65 win over Bloomsburg of Division II in an exhibition game on Nov. 1.
This will be the third meeting in history between these programs. Towson won the last encounter, 86-75, in 2006.
The Cougars will be led on the floor by Andrew Lawrence, who represented the Great Britain National Team in this past summer's London Olympic Games. The senior point guard averaged 13 points and 5.5 assists last season while quarterbacking Charleston's offense. Aggressive off-guard Anthony Stitt joins Lawrence in the backcourt. The slashing sophomore averaged 9.7 ppg as a rookie. Juco transfer Anthony Thomas makes his debut as Charleston's starting small forward. Trent Weideman (6-8, 255) and Adjehi Baru (6-9, 225) provide a solid starting front line for the Cougars.
Towson has a new look with only three returning scholarship players back. However, the Tigers should fare better this season with a trio of Big East transfers, a highly-touted juco transfer, and a deep recruiting class. Mike Burwell (South Florida), Bilal Dixon (Providence), and Jerrelle Benimon (Georgetown) are all expected to start immediately. Junior forward Marcus Damas is the team's leading returning scorer (12.5 ppg) and rebounder (5.3 rpg). The Tigers are also expecting big things from freshman guard Jerome Hairston, who was a First Team All-State selection in North Carolina as a senior and Virginia as a junior in high school.
The new flock of talent in Towson's rotation could win it some games once its fully blended. The Tigers will need some time before they start clicking. Charleston should be able to pick up the victory with Lawrence leading the way.
