GAME NOTES: The Austin Peay Governors travel to Redbird Arena to take on the Illinois State Redbirds in a non-conference clash.
The Redbirds enter at 8-3, coming off an impressive win at Dayton on Wednesday night. Jackie Carmichael registered a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Redbirds to a 74-73 victory over the Flyers. Tyler Brown added 16 points and five assists while Jon Ekey chipped in 13 points. ISU shot well to open the contest, connecting on 53.6 percent of its field goal attempts, as the Redbirds took a 42-40 advantage into the break. In the second half, the Redbirds remained hot, making 52.2 percent of their field goal attempts. The Flyers managed to stay close and took a one-point lead at 62-61 with just under eight minutes to play. The Redbirds scored the next seven points to go back ahead for good. Dayton had two chances to win the game in the final seconds, but both shots were off the mark, allowing the Redbirds to escape with the victory.
Leading the Redbirds is Carmichael, who is averaging 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He is coming off a double-double against Dayton, a performance that saw him net 25 points. In addition, Brown is averaging 17.4 points per game for the high-octane offense that averages 80.8 points per tilt and connects from the field at a 50.9 percent clip.
This is the first meeting between APSU, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, and ISU, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Govs are coming off a difficult loss at home to Lipscomb, where they blew a 12-point lead with just over three minutes remaining and fell to the Bison, who scored the game's final 15 points. The defeat wasted a career-high 25 points from forward Anthony Campbell, who was one of five APSU players to score in double figures in the loss.
Travis Beltran leads the Govs in scoring, averaging 16.6 points per game, while Campbell nets 13.3 points per game. Will Triggs is the team's leading rebounder at 5.2 per game, to go along with his 10.6 points per contest. As a team, APSU is averaging 71.5 points per game while giving up 73.5. The Govs have had trouble holding onto the ball, turning it over at a rate of 18.2 times per game.
This will be the first of five straight games Austin Peay will play away from home, and it will likely not start off the road trip well. The Redbirds have been laying on the points of late, and should be able to handle the struggling Govs with relative ease.
