GAME NOTES: Before heading into a lengthy break, the New Mexico State Aggies head to Mobile on Tuesday where they will contend with the South Alabama Jaguars in non-conference action at the Mitchell Center.
New Mexico State, which will be out of action until Dec. 15 following tonight's meeting, has won three of its last four outings and is now an even 4-4 on the campaign as a result. Against Southern Miss at home over the weekend, the Aggies registered a 68-60 victory in order to remain perfect at the Pan American Center after four games this season.
The Jaguars opened the season with back-to-back wins before dropping three games in as many days during the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The program managed to rebound with two more wins thanks to a 77-66 triumph over Florida Atlantic and a 79-68 victory versus FIU on the road on Saturday. With those most recent outcomes, USA is off to a 2-0 start in Sun Belt Conference play for the first time since 2009-10.
The Aggies lead the all-time series by one game at 7-6, Although USA has won two straight over NMSU thanks to a 63-55 victory in the most recent encounter back in 2005.
Daniel Mullings scored a game-high 21 points as he guided the Aggies to an eight-point win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in non-conference action at the Pan American Center on Saturday night. Mullings finished with a double- double as he also cleared a game-high 11 rebounds for the Aggies, while Sim Bhullar accounted for 17 points and seven rebounds of his own off the bench for the hosts. New Mexico State, which shot only 1-of-5 behind the three-point line in the meeting, overcame 20 turnovers in order the hand the Golden Eagles their first setback of the season. Turnovers have been a huge issue for the Aggies in the early going, the squad suffering an average of close to 18 miscues per contest, which is why the group is scoring only 67.9 ppg. Mullings paces the group both in scoring (14.0 ppg) and on the glass (6.6 rpg), the latter an area in which, for the moment at least, NMSU is topping the competition by almost 11 rebounds per outing.
The Jaguars lit up the scoreboard from long range against the FIU Panthers over the weekend, the team hitting a total of 13 3-point baskets as the players earned head coach Ronnie Arrow his record-setting 112th league victory, overtaking Gene Bartow of UAB who previously held the all-time mark. Mychal Ammons converted 5-of-7 shots beyond the arc as he finished with 21 points, followed by Augustine Rubit with 19 points and nine rebounds. Antoine Allen came off the bench to shoot a perfect 3-of-3 out on the perimeter and 4- of-4 at the free-throw line as he finished with 13 points, followed by Freddie Goldstein with 11 points and five assists. Rubit, a 52.2 percent shooter from the floor on the season who is also 90.5 percent at the charity stripe, leads the group in scoring with 19.1 ppg and is also first on the glass (9.0 rpg). Xavier Roberson (13.7 ppg) and Ammons (12.4 ppg) are also key figures for an offense producing 73.6 ppg on the season.
Playing at home and coming off such a strong outing over the weekend, the Jaguars have momentum on their side as they aim to take care of business once again.
