Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Mo Evans netted a team-high 18 points on 6- of-7 shooting as the IUPU-Fort Wayne Mastodons barely edged out the Denver Pioneers, 67-64, in Summit League play at Magness Arena.
Steve Forbes contributed 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for IPFW (15-5, 3-0 Summit). Pierre Bland added 13 points and four rebounds, hitting 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. The Mastodons have won five consecutive contests.
Cam Griffin paced Denver (7-10, 0-2) with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Griffin connected on 6-of-6 shooting in the game. Brett Olson, Bryant Rucker and Marcus Byrd each chipped in 11 points. Denver has lost three games in a row, and four of its last five.
Neither team started strong, as IPFW hit just 38.1 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half, but still took a 25-24 lead into the locker rooms. Denver shot 41.7 percent in the first frame.
The second half was much more kind to the Mastodons, as they shot 52.4 percent from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. The Pioneers also improved, shooting 60.9 percent from the field. IPFW outscored the Pioneers, 42-40, in the period.
IPFW had the advantage in free throws, hitting 22 to Denver's nine. The Mastodons also held the edge in points off turnovers, 28-10.
