Kalamazoo, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Shayne Whittington knocked down 11-of-12 at the free-throw line on his way to 21 points, as the Western Michigan Broncos outlasted the Northern Illinois Huskies, 61-56, in Mid-American Conference action at University Arena.
David Brown added 18 points for WMU (20-9, 13-4 MAC), which has won nine of 10 and remained tied for first place in the MAC West with Toledo. Connar Tava handed out eight assists for the hosts.
For NIU (13-16, 7-10), which has lost three of four, Aaric Armstead poured in 15 points, while Jordan Threloff tallied a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Neither team shot greater than 37 percent from the field in the first half, but NIU took a slim 25-24 lead into intermission by outscoring WMU from 3- point range, 9-0.
The Huskies continued to lead late in the second half until the Broncos used a 12-3 run to take a four-point lead with 1:41 remaining. After NIU came back to tie the score at 55 with 46 seconds left on an Armstead layup, WMU answered on its next possession with a Tava bucket, and the squad knocked down 4-of-4 at the foul line over the final 16 seconds to seal the victory.
The difference came at the charity stripe, where WMU shot 26-of-33 compared to NIU's 13-of-17 showing.
