NCAA Game Summary - George Mason at La Salle

(Thursday, March 6th)

Final Score: George Mason 59, La Salle 57

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Marko Gujanicic made a go-ahead layup with 21 seconds left in regulation to help the George Mason Patriots edged the La Salle Explorers, 59-57, in an Atlantic 10 Conference battle at Tom Gola Arena.

Gujanicic finished with a team-high 15 points and also pulled down eight rebounds for the Patriots (11-18, 4-11 A-10) as they notched their second win in three games. Sherrod Wright and Patrick Holloway added 10 points apiece, while Erik Copes grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

For La Salle (14-15, 6-9), Tyrone Garland netted 16 points and pulled down six boards. Tyreek Duren scored 13 points, Sam Mills had 12 points and Steve Zack corralled a team-best seven boards. The loss snapped the Explorers' two-game winning streak.

La Salle opened up the contest on a 9-0 run, but the visitors chipped away at the deficit as the first half progressed. Byron Allen sank a pair of free- throws for GMU to tie the score at 27 with just under a minute remaining before the intermission, but the Explorers took a 29-27 lead into halftime after Garland drained two shots at the charity stripe to put them in front. The Patriots were limited to just 29 percent efficiency from the floor, including a 1-of-7 clip from 3-point range in the opening period.

GMU heated up to hit on 43.3 percent of its shots from the floor after the break, while La Salle made good on only 31 percent of its field goal tries. After Gujanicic's clutch layup, Garland missed a 3-pointer for La Salle and Allen came down with the rebound. Allen was sent to the charity stripe with one second showing on the clock and made his first free-throw try, but missed his second and the Explorers did not have enough time to attempt another shot.

The Patriots enjoyed a 43-35 edge in the rebounding battle and outscored La Salle, 28-18, in the paint.
