Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Gee McGhee and Z. Mason each scored 17 points to lead the Chattanooga Mocs to a 74-70 victory over the Samford Bulldogs in a Southern Conference bout at the Pete Hanna Center.
McGhee also added five assists for Chattanooga (6-9, 1-2 SoCon), which has now won four of its past five games. Farad Cobb went for 16 points and Martynas Bareika tallied nine points and eight rebounds.
Samford (3-12, 0-3) lost despite a career-high 27 points from Raijon Kelly, who played all 40 minutes and made 6-of-8 from long range. Tim Williams hit 7- of-8 attempts from the floor and scored 18 points to go along with three steals.
The Mocs began the game on a 22-6 run but led by just one at halftime, 39-38. Samford shot an impressive 55.6 percent from the field in the half.
With the Bulldogs trailing by two late in the contest, Kelly had an opportunity to give his team the lead but his three-point attempt was off the mark. Ronrico White made two free throws at the other end to seal the win for Chattanooga.
Chattanooga was able to overcome 18 turnovers by winning the rebounding battle, 30-17.
