Athens, OH (Sports Network) - D.J. Cooper led four Bobcats in double figures with 18 points as the Ohio University Bobcats cruised by the visiting Portland Pilots, 81-52, at the Convocation Center in season-opening action.
Cooper was 7-of-13 shooting from the floor, including three three-point field goals to go with his six assists, five rebounds, and three steals in the Ohio (1-0) victory. Nick Kellogg also scored 18 points while he was a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range and 6-of-7 at the free-throw line. Reggie Keely added 13 points while Ivo Baltic joined in with 10.
Ryan Nicholas recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds but was the only player to score in double-figures for Portland (0-1) who struggled to find much of an offense. Kevin Bailey contributed nine points and four assists.
The first half ended with both teams even at 33-33. While Ohio played an impressive defensive half, forcing 13 turnovers and recording eight steals along with three blocks, their eleven fouls allowed nine points at the free- throw line for Portland.
The Bobcats blew the Pilots out in the second half, outscoring the visitors 48-19. Ohio made good on 61.5 percent from the field in the period, compared to a mere 7-of-27 (.259) for the opposition.
Ohio forced 23 turnovers and knocked down 8-of-17 shots behind the three-point line.
