Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Led by a game-high 21 points from Jahii Carson, the Arizona State Sun Devils downed the Cornell Big Red, 64-53, as part of the Las Vegas Invitational at Wells Fargo Arena.
For the Sun Devils (3-0), Carrick Felix finished with 10 points and Jordan Bachynski pulled down 10 rebounds.
Shonn Miller posted a double-double for the Big Red (1-4) with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Josh Figini added 12 points.
Arizona State made only 27.6 percent of its field goal attempts, including just 3-of-18 from three-point range in the first half. Cornell was slightly better, connecting on 34.8 percent from the field, and managed to make 4-of-11 from beyond the arc in order to take a 25-22 lead into intermission.
The Sun Devils improved their shooting to 44 percent in the second half while holding the Big Red to just 35.5 percent. The hosts also held a 15-4 scoring advantage at the free-throw line after the break. Trailing by two midway through the second half, ASUs used a 12-2 to take the lead for good.
The Sun Devils scored 18 points off of 23 Big Red turnovers. Cornell's bench outscored their counterparts, 24-11.
Both these teams will be in action in the next round of the tournament on Friday as it moves to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Arizona State will play Arkansas and Cornell is set to take on Presbyterian.
