Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) - Ryan Anderson was unstoppable with 29 points and 17 rebounds as he led the Boston College Eagles to an 84-70 decision over the FIU Golden Panthers in a non-conference tilt at Conte Forum.
While Anderson paced BC (1-0), Dennis Clifford, Olivier Hanlan, and Patrick Heckmann netted 12 points each. Clifford also made an impact on the defensive end with three blocks. Joe Rahon dished out a game-high six assists and also recorded a game-high three steals. The Eagles, who averaged just 59.3 ppg in 2011-2012, did a great job of getting to and converting at the foul line with a 30-of-39 clip at the charity stripe.
Jerome Frink led FIU (0-1) with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the head coaching debut of Richard Pitino. Malik Smith added 16 points and Tola Akomolafe provided 10 points in 21 minutes before fouling out.
Boston College jumped out to an early lead which it rode to a 49-33 halftime advantage. The Eagles shot 47.4 percent from the field and converted 11-of-15 attempts at the free throw line in the opening period. FIU would have fallen into a much deeper hole had it not made 5-of-14 from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
The Golden Panthers went on a 10-2 run in the opening two minutes of the second half and tied the score at 65-65 with 8:46 left before the final buzzer. BC went on a 12-0 run to end the comeback effort. The Eagles scored 19 points at the foul line to make up for a poor 0-of-6 shooting performance from three- point range in the second half.
Boston College dominated inside and held a 46-28 advantage in the rebounding battle.
