GAME NOTES: The Kansas State Wildcats have won two games in a row, and will look to extend that streak as they clash with Big 12 Conference rival Baylor for the first time this season at the Ferrell Center.
Kansas State has won two in a row and three of its last four games, including a huge 85-82 overtime victory over intrastate rival, No. 7 ranked Kansas on Monday. The Wildcats are 7-4 in the conference standings.
Baylor started the year strong, but has hit a rough patch recently that was made a little bit better with a 91-58 victory over TCU Wednesday. Still, the Bears have lost seven of their last nine games, and find themselves at 3-8 in the Big 12 standings.
Kansas State leads the all-time series between the two programs, 16-12. The Wildcats will play in Waco Saturday, and then get the Bears at home on March 8 in their final game of the regular season.
The overtime victory over Kansas represents the first time the Wildcats had beaten the Jayhawks in three years, and was the program's 100th win over a ranked opponent in school history. Marcus Foster led Kansas State in the game with 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Will Spradling netted 15 points and dished out a team-high five assists in the victory. The Wildcats shot 49.2 percent from the floor in the contest.
Foster leads the team in scoring this season with a 15 ppg average on 42.7 percent shooting from the floor. Thomas Gipson checks in with 11.6 ppg on an impressive 57.3 percent shooting, and sports a team-leading 6.3 rpg average. Shane Southwell is the third scorer for Kansas State averaging double figures with 10.4 ppg. His 74 assists and 25 blocked shots are individual highs on the team.
Baylor connected on a season-high 16 3-pointers in the Bears' rout of TCU in their last outing. Brady Heslip netted 24 points to pace the Bears, and had half of the 16 3-pointers for Baylor. Isaiah Austin and Rico Gathers each contributed 14 points in the win, while Gathers notched a double-double with 11 boards. Royce O'Neale and Cory Jefferson each chipped in 10 points for Baylor.
Jefferson is the team leader in scoring this season, netting 12.3 ppg on 51.7 percent shooting from the floor. He's only 10 totals points ahead of Heslip on the year (295-285), who averages 11.9 ppg with a 48.4 percent shooting clip from 3-point distance. Austin checks in at 10.6 ppg for the Bears. Jefferson is the team's top rebounder at 7.8 rpg, and Kenny Chery tops the squad with 107 assists on the year.
It's been a struggle to string anything together for Baylor since starting up Big 12 Conference play. Kansas State doesn't get a ton of scoring, but holds its opponents to 62.7 ppg with very stingy defense. The Wildcats will continue to make a push for the top spot in the conference, and will try to topple Baylor with all they've got.
