Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Matthew Dellavedova hit a running 3-pointer from just inside the half court line to lift the Saint Mary's Gaels to a 70-69 victory over the BYU Cougars in a West Coast Conference thriller at the Marriott Center.
Dellavedova scored 18 points and handed out eight assists and Stephen Holt had a team-high 22 points for Saint Mary's (14,4, 3-1 WCC). James Walker added 13 points and Mitchell Young chipped in 10 more for the Gaels who have won six of their last seven.
Tyler Haws scored a game-high 23 points for BYU (14-5, 4-1) while Matt Carlino added 16 and Brandon Davis tacked on 12 before fouling out. The Cougars had a six-game winning streak snapped in the contest.
In the first half BYU shot 53.6 percent from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, to take a 34-27 lead into halftime. Saint Mary's hit just 35.5 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes.
The Cougars again shot better than 50 percent from the field in the second half by connecting on 12-of-23 shots. Saint Mary's improved to 48.3 percent shooting while hitting 7-of-11 shots from 3-point range.
With the game tied 65-65 with 41 seconds remaining Haws nailed a jumper to put BYU ahead, 67-65, Dellavedova answered with a jump shot on the other end to tie the game once again. With two seconds remaining Haws sank another shot to put the Cougars back in the lead with two seconds remaining. Dellavedova took the inbounds pass to just beyond half court and avoided several defenders to get off a double-clutch shot that fell through as the buzzer sounded.
Saint Mary's had a 36-29 edge in rebounding in the contest and outscored the Cougars 30-18 from beyond the arc.
