Springfield, MA (Sports Network) - Chavaughn Lewis finished with 14 points and seven rebounds as the eighth-seeded Marist Red Foxes defeated the ninth-seeded Saint Peter's Peacocks in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament.
Devin Price and Jay Bowie contributed 14 points each for Marist (14-17), which is seeking its first even MAAC Tournament title. R.J. Hall added 10 points off the bench in the winning effort.
Darius Conley led SPC (5-26) with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Lamin Fulton and Brandon Hall chipped in 12 points each. Blaise Ffrench scored 10 points for the Peacocks as they lost in the first round after winning the 2011 MAAC Tournament.
Marist took a 26-21 lead into the intermission despite shooting only 36 percent from the field in the opening period. The Peacocks fell behind after they connected on just 1-of-7 attempts from three-point range in the first half.
SPC managed to tie the score up four times in the second half, but it was not able to take the lead at any point in the final 20 minutes. The Red Foxes held off the Peacocks by shooting 54.5 percent from the field and hitting 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc in the second half.
Marist managed to score 19 points off of turnovers, while the Peacocks scored only eight points off of the Red Foxes' nine turnovers.
Marist will play the top-seeded Iona Gaels in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
