GAME NOTES: Two bottom-dwellers in the ACC do battle this evening at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, as the Boston College Eagles host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, with the loser claiming sole possession of last place in the conference standings.
Georgia Tech has a disappointing 10-18 record overall and a 3-11 mark in the conference, and though it had lost four straight and 10 of 11 heading into Saturday's game against Maryland, it notched an impressive 63-61 victory in comeback fashion. The Yellow Jackets are just 3-8 on the road this season, but with a win tonight will claim two ACC road wins for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
Boston College also has a 3-11 record in the ACC, but it has fared even worse than Georgia Tech overall at just 8-20, the only team in the conference yet to reach the 10-win plateau. The Eagles have lost four in a row and 10 of 11, including a blowout loss to Wake Forest on Saturday, 85-56. Tonight will be BC's last home game of the season, and it is a respectable 7-9 at Conte Forum this year, including its best win of the year over nationally-ranked Florida State on February 8.
Georgia Tech has a 9-5 advantage over Boston College in the all-time series. The Eagles had won three of the previous four meetings before the Yellow Jackets won the first matchup of the year, 51-47, in Atlanta on February 4.
Georgia Tech came back from a six-point halftime deficit in Saturday's game by playing great defense in the second stanza, holding Maryland to just 7-of-30 from the field after the break. The Yellow Jackets shot 44.9 percent from the floor for the game, which was a welcomed sign after they shot just 31.2 percent in netting 37 points in the February 21 loss to Clemson -- their lowest point total in any game since 1980. Georgia Tech has been no stranger to poor offense this season, ranking next-to-last in the ACC in scoring (61.0 ppg). Kammeon Holsey averages 9.5 ppg, but went off in Saturday's win with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Holsey has come on of late, averaging 13.2 ppg and 5.8 rpg in the last six games. Glen Rice, Jr. (13 ppg, 6.7 rpg) had been the Yellow Jackets' best performer before he was suspended indefinitely for unspecified reasons on February 17.
Boston College's 29-point defeat at the hands of Wake Forest on Saturday was its worst of the season, as it shot 43.1 percent from the floor and 5-of-15 from three-point range, while allowing the Demon Deacons to connect on 55.4 percent of their total shots. Ryan Anderson continued his stellar play of late by tallying 18 points and nine rebounds, and he has averaged 18.4 ppg and 8.0 rpg the last five times out. With a scoring average of only 59.4 ppg, the Eagles are the only team who scores less points than Georgia Tech, and they also have a conference-worst field goal percentage of .407. Anderson has been a solid contributor all season, leading the team with 11.0 ppg while ranking eighth in the ACC in rebounding (7.0 rpg). Matt Humphrey has been the team's best outside threat at 10.2 ppg with 52 three-pointers, but he struggles from the field at just 34.8 percent. Along with having the two worst offenses, this game also features the two most-turnover prone teams in the conference, with BC owning a turnover margin of -2.57, and Tech an even worse -3.50.
Georgia Tech has some momentum on its side after a win over the weekend, and its struggles on the road have come against teams much more potent that Boston College. It will more than likely come down to the wire, but expect the Yellow Jackets to complete the season sweep of the Eagles.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Georgia Tech 64, Boston College 62
