Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Joseph Young scored 27 points to lead the Houston Cougars as they defeated the SMU Mustangs 62-59 in Conference USA action at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Jonathon Simmons finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for Houston (13-14, 5-9 C-USA), while TaShawn Thomas chipped in 10 points.
Robert Nyakundi scored 24 points to lead SMU (12-17, 3-11), as it lost for the fourth time in five games. Jeremiah Samarrippas dished out nine assists and Shawn Williams grabbed seven rebounds in the losing effort.
Houston took a 28-20 lead into the intermission after it shot 45.8 percent from the field in the opening period. The Mustangs fell behind as they managed to make only 29.2 percent of their field goal tries in the first half.
SMU battled back after the break by shooting 52.2 percent from the field and connecting on 9-of-17 from beyond the arc. Although their lead shrunk to as little as one-point, the Cougars stayed in front for the entire second half as they shot 66.7 percent from the field and converted 8-of-12 at the charity stripe.
Houston outscored SMU, 22-6, in the paint and held a 30-21 advantage in the rebounding battle.
