GAMES NOTES: The Appalachian State Mountaineers and The Citadel Bulldogs will meet up in a Southern Conference battle at McAlister Field House this evening.
This is the only scheduled meeting between these schools this season. Appalachian State has controlled the all-time series, holding a 73-51 advantage. The teams split the season series a year ago.
Appalachian State is picking up momentum as the regular season nears it conclusion as the Mountaineers have won three of their last four matchups after defeating Winthrop 79-70 in a BracketBuster pairing on Saturday. In conference play Appalachian State is 7-9, fourth in the SoCon North Division. The Mountaineers will finish their regular season on the road against Western Carolina on Saturday.
The Citadel snapped a season-long losing streak of 11 games during BracketBuster weekend when the Bulldogs outlasted Chattanooga 48-46. Wins have been hard to come by for The Citadel this season with the Bulldogs just 2-14 in the SoCon and 5-22 overall. The Bulldogs wrap up the year with a matchup against the College of Charleston on Saturday.
Appalachian State shot 47.3 percent from the floor and 7-of-17 from three point range against Winthrop on Saturday but had a huge advantage from the free-throw line outscoring the Eagles 17-4 from the charity stripe.
On the season Appalachian State is scoring 68.4 points per game which is seventh in the conference while the team keeps games close by allowing 69.8 points per game. Senior Isaac Butts (7.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg) had a monster game against Winthrop with 15 points and 15 rebounds to record his third double- doubles this season. It was also the second straight game of at least 15 rebounds for Butts. Senior guard Omar Carter (12.0 ppg, 5.9 rpg) also scored 15 points and is currently the lone Mountaineer averaging in double figure this season. Andre Williamson (9.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg) has been the more consistent force for the team in the frontcourt, but he had only two points and one rebound in 13 minutes against Winthrop. Junior guard Jamaal Trice (9.8 ppg) can also put up solid scoring numbers for the Mountaineers.
The Citadel shot an even 45.0 percent from the floor including a stellar 10- of-21 from three-point range while holding Chattanooga to just 32.1 percent and 3-of-21 from beyond the arc to overcome 17 turnovers in the winning effort on Saturday.
Despite being the only team with fewer than 10 wins in the Southern Conference, The Citadel have not been the worst offense in the league this season. Although not robust at 65.2 points per game the Bulldogs are the 10th highest scoring team in the conference. On defense The Citadel have struggled allowing 73.5 points per game. The win against Chattanooga came without a strong scoring effort from Mike Groselle (16.6 ppg) but the senior center made up for it by ripping down 15 rebounds in the win. The effort keeps Groselle at the top of the conference in the category as Groselle brings down 9.6 boards per contest. Stepping in to lead the offense was freshman Lawrence Miller (6.1 ppg) who tied a career-high with 15 points. Miller has now scored in double figures in consecutive games for only the second time this season. Ashton Moore (8.1 ppg) and DeVontae Wright (8.0 ppg) are the normal compliments to Groselle.
The Citadel has not had much of a homecourt advantage at McAlister Field House this season with just a 3-9 mark on its home hardwood. With the superior offense and more balance on its roster Appalachian State should keep the home woes going for the Bulldogs.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Appalachian State 63, The Citadel 56
