Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Jonathon Simmons led all scorers with 28 points as the Houston Cougars pulled off an upset over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 73-71 in Conference-USA action at Hofheinz Pavilion.
TaShawn Thomas and Alandise Harris each scored 11 points for Houston (12-13, 4-8 C-USA) while Thomas also grabbed 11 rebounds. Joseph Young chipped in 10 points for the Cougars, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
For Southern Miss (22-5, 9-3), Neil Watson scored 27 points and Jonathan Mills tallied a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Houston shot an impressive 51.7 percent from the field in the first half to take a comfortable 38-27 lead into intermission.
Southern Miss came storming back to take a 53-49 lead on a Torye Pope layup with 8:40 remaining. Houston answered however with an 11-2 run to retake the lead 60-55 inside of six minutes to go. The Cougars went 8-of-8 from the foul line in the final 26 seconds to ice the victory.
Houston held a sizable advantage on the boards, 39-28.
