Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Michael Perez scored 15 points as the Texas-El Paso Miners stunned the Memphis Tigers 60-58 in a Conference USA battle at the FedEx Forum.
Jacques Streeter joined Perez in double figures by scoring 14 for Texas-El Paso (13-13, 6-6 C-USA). Gabriel McCulley pulled down 12 rebounds and was a point short of a double-double as well for the Miners who have won three straight.
Tarik Black posted a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis (19-8, 9-3) which had a four game winning streak halted.
Both teams shot poorly in the first half with Memphis converting on 34.8 percent to just 32.0 percent by Texas-El Paso. The Tigers stretched its halftime advantage to 28-19 by outscoring the Miners 10-2 from the free throw line.
Texas-El Paso opened the second half on a 12-4 run and trailed by just a point with 15:04 remaining however the Miners would not take a lead until they pulled ahead 57-55 with 1:19 left on a pair of Cedrick Lang free throws. Memphis had a shot to win it at the end but a Will Barton three point attempt missed as time expired to give Texas-El Paso the come-from-behind win.
The Miners shot 44.2 percent overall in the game while Memphis shot at a 37.5 percent clip. The Tigers were just 4-of-17 from beyond the arc.
