Boone, NC (Sports Network) - Mike Neal led the way with 23 points as the Appalachian State Mountaineers downed the Chattanooga Mocs, 79-70, in a Southern Conference tilt at the Holmes Center.
For the Mountaineers (11-15, 7-9 SoCon), Nathan Healy added 11 points and Isaac Butts pulled down 16 rebounds.
Dontay Hampton led the Mocs (10-18, 4-11) with 17 points, while Ronrico White finished with 16 points and Drazen Zlovaric scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
ASU opened the game connecting on 45.7 percent of their field goals, including 6-of-13 from behind the three-point arc. The hosts held Chattanooga to just 26.5 percent shooting from the field, as the Mountaineers led at halftime, 40-25.
The Mocs improved in the second half, hitting 40 percent from the floor, but just 2-of-9 from three-point range. The Mountaineers continued to shoot well, making 45.8 percent of their field goals after intermission. After leading by as many as 22 points in the second half, ASU was able to hold on for the victory and even the season series with Chattanooga.
The Mocs held a slight rebounding edge, 46-42, and outscored the Mountaineers in the paint, 30-26.
