Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Ben Averkamp came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points, leading five players in double figures, as the Ramblers of Loyola-Chicago registered a 78-69 win over the Illinois-Chicago Flames in Horizon League action at Joseph J. Gentile Arena.
Jordan Hicks added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Ramblers (6-18, 1-13 HL) as they finally broke through in conference play and snapped an 11-game losing streak. Walt Gibler and Denzel Brito both added 11 points and Chim Kadima 10 points in a reserve role as well.
The Flames (7-17, 3-11) were paced by Gary Talton who tallied a game-high 18 points, while Daniel Barnes contributed 15 as the team bowed for the sixth time in the last seven outings.
Loyola scored the first points of the afternoon and never looked back, hitting on 57.1 percent from the floor, including 6-of-9 behind the three-point line, as the Ramblers ran out to a 39-26 lead at the break.
In the second half the hosts dipped to just 45.8 percent accuracy from the floor, but picked up 15 points at the free-throw line in order to secure the nine-point win.
Loyola took the win despite turning the ball over 14 times and shooting just 16-of-28 at the charity stripe.
