GAMES NOTES: The South Alabama Jaguars will travel to Faint-Ewing Coliseum for a Sun Belt Conference tussle with ULM on Saturday.
ULM has won the last two meetings between these squads but South Alabama has a 8-4 advantage historically including wins in the first six straight after ULM joined the Sun Belt in 2001.
After a three-game losing streak in mid-January, South Alabama has gotten back on track, winning three of its last four including a 74-57 rout of Arkansas State on Thursday. The Jaguars are now 5-7 in conference play which is good enough for third in the Sun Belt East Division. South Alabama will play its final home game of the season when the Jaguars matchup with Western Kentucky next Saturday.
ULM has really not had a stretch of success this season and is currently riding a seven-game losing streak, which is actually the second longest losing streak of the season for the Warhawks. ULM has managed just a 1-10 record in conference play, the worst mark in the Sun Belt. The Warhawks will be on the road against North Texas next time out.
South Alabama shot an impressive 53.8 percent from the floor in its win over Arkansas State on Thursday. The Jaguars also benefited from a 34-23 advantage on the boards an a 15-8 edge in points from the free throw line in the double- digit victory.
Mychal Ammons scored a career-high 25 points in the win over the Red Wolves which was a bit out of character for the freshman, who is averaging 8.7 points per game this year. Ammons' performance took some of the pressure off of sophomore forward Augustine Rubit (14.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg) who has been carrying South Alabama all season as the team's leading scorer and rebounder. Antione Lundy (9.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Javier Carter (6.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg) team with Rubit for the Jaguars' formidable frontline. Junior guard Freddie Goldstein is the team's only other double-figure scorer, putting in 10.3 points per contest while Trey Anderson has been a good facilitator, handing out 3.2 assists per game.
ULM came close to ending its losing streak against Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday but a second-half comeback fell short, as the Warhawks lost 70-66. Although ULM out-shot the Trojans, netting 41.5 percent to just 34.0 percent from Arkansas-Little Rock, the Warhawks couldn't overcome a 32-15 deficit from the free-throw line.
A team doesn't amass 22 losses by scoring the ball well and that has not been an area ULM has excelled in this season. The Warhawks are scoring a conference-worst 59.0 points per game, while shooting just 40.2 percent from the floor this season. ULM is also weak on the boards, bringing down 31.2 rebounds per game. Senior guard Fred Brown is one of two players for the Warhawks that is averaging in double figures this season, putting in 11.6 points per game while also dishing out a team high 2.3 assists per contest. Sophomore guard Charles Winborne (10.9 ppg) is the second double digit scorer and has been a good shooter from beyond the arc, knocking down 42.9 percent of his shots from three point range. Sophomore center Steven McClelland (8.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg) will have the responsibility of countering the South Alabama frontcourt.
ULM has only two wins this season and neither of them have come at home. South Alabama will not be the first team to lose at Faint-Ewing Coliseum, as the Jaguars' frontcourt should power the visitors to a win.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: South Alabama 69, ULM 51
