Appalachian State defeated Elon 81-66 in the first meeting between these schools this season. The win pushes the Mountaineers series advantage to 14-5.
Appalachian State has lost three of four games with the lone win the victory over Elon. The recent skid puts the Mountaineers at 5-7 in-conference, fourth in the SoCon North Division. Appalachian State continues on the road against Furman in its next matchup.
Elon has won four of its last five games after losing seven of eight earlier in the season. The Phoenix is now 7-4 in conference action which puts it a half game ahead of UNC Greensboro for the top spot in the North Division. Elon will begin a three-game road trip following this contest.
Appalachian State couldn't defend the College of Charleston from beyond the arc in suffering a 74-62 defeat at home on Saturday. The Cougars outscored the Mountaineers 33-9 from the three-point line. Appalachian State did hold an edge on the glass by a margin of 46-32, but it wasn't enough to earn a win.
Appalachian State's is near the middle of the pack this season in scoring, netting 67.7 points per game (seventh in the conference). The Mountaineers allow 69.7 points per game but are especially effective defensively on the inside, as they block 4.1 shots per game (leads the SoCon). Senior forward Andre Williamson leads in that regard, swatting 1.6 shots (tops in the league). Williamson also cleans up on the glass pulling in 7.2 rebounds per game while adding 10.1 points per contest. Senior guard Omar Carter (13.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg) is the leading scorer, but has been limited to just 13 total points in the last two contests. Junior guard Jamal Trice is the third Mountaineer averaging in double digits, putting in 11.0 points per game.
Elon wrapped up a two-game homestand with a 71-66 victory over The Citadel on Saturday. The Phoenix shot 43.9 percent from the floor and got a career night from Jack Isenbarger, who scored 34 points while collecting five rebounds and dishing out five assists.
The offensive outburst continues Isenbarger's reign as the top scorer for Elon. The sophomore guard is now putting in 13.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in six straight games including more than 20 in four straight. Isenbarger's efforts help fuel an Elon offense that is fourth in the conference in scoring at 69.8 points per game despite shooting poorly. The Phoenix convert only 40.8 percent from the floor, which is 11th in the conference. Sophomore forward Lucas Troutman (13.0 ppg,, 6.0 rpg) is just behind Isenbarger in the scoring column. His rebounding efforts lead the team. Troutman has done well in the last two games, averaging 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Austin Hamilton also scores in double digits at 10.8 per game, while moving the ball efficiently with a team-leading 3.2 assist per game.
Appalachian State has not found a lot of success on the road this season going just 2-8 away from home. Although Elon is not an overpowering team, with the advantage of playing at Alumni Gym and the recent offensive surge of Isenbarger and Troutman, the Phoenix should earn the win here.
