El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - A Preston Purifoy jumper with 51 seconds left in the game proved to be the game-winner as the UAB Blazers took down the Texas-El Paso Miners 61-60 in Conference USA action at Don Haskins Center.
Jordan Swing scored 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 5-of-8 from three-point range for UAB (9-13, 4-5 C-USA). Purifoy scored 12 points and Cameron Moore collected 11 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks for the Blazers, who have won three out of four.
For UTEP (10-13, 3-6), John Bohannon led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Julian Washburn added 16 points of the Miners, who have lost four in a row.
UAB got out to a 31-27 lead at the half. Though the Blazers shot just 36.7 percent from the floor to the Miners 46.4 percent, UAB was able to take the lead thanks to five three-pointers. UTEP went just 1-of-3 from beyond the arc.
UTEP opened the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 34-33 lead with 14:49 left. The teams spend most of the rest of the half on the sea saw, and after a pair of Gabriel McCulley free throws tied the game at 59-59 with 1:02 remaining, Purifoy answered on the next possession to take a 61-59 lead. McCulley had another chance at the line to tie the game but went 1-of-2. UTEP had one final shot at the win but a Michael Perez three-pointer did not fall.
UAB's bench outscored UTEP's second unit, 26-2.
