GAME NOTES: The Boston College Eagles hit the road as they head to Philips Arena to battle the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlantic Coast Conference action this afternoon.
This will be the 14th meeting in the all-time series. The Yellow Jackets have gone 8-5 against the Eagles in the rivalry's history. Boston College won the only meeting between these teams last year 86-75 in Chestnut Hill, and has won three of the last four games.
The Eagles ride a five-game losing streak into this one after they fell 56-51 to the NC State Wolfpack on Wednesday. The loss to NC State made Boston College 7-15 overall and 2-6 in league play. The Eagles were held to 38.8 percent shooting from the floor as they were held under 60 points for the fourth-straight game. Boston College has the lowest scoring offense in the ACC as it averages just 59.9 ppg. Opponents have managed to score 68.2 ppg against BC. The Eagles are second to last in the conference in blocks, steals, and turnover margin.
Boston College lacks a stand out player that many of its ACC rivals possess. Matt Humphrey's 9.9 points per game, which is not in the top 25 in the conference, is the highest on the team. Humphrey scored a team-high 15 points in the team's last outing versus NC State. Lonnie Jackson added 10 points in the same contest. Ryan Anderson contributes 9.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while Patrick Heckmann nets 9.1 ppg. Dennis Clifford has been a decent man in the middle with averages of 9.4 points and 5.3 boards per game. Heckmann, Jackson, Anderson, and Clifford are all freshmen.
Head coach Brian Gregory has seen his team drop six straight decisions to arrive at a 8-14 overall record and a league worst 1-7 mark in ACC action. On Wednesday, the Yellow Jackets fell 68-54 to Florida State, which was their 10th loss in 11 games. Georgia Tech challenged the nationally ranked Seminoles and even lead at halftime, but it could not keep up the pace and Florida State rallied and ran away with it after the break. The Yellow Jackets average scoring margin of -1.2 points per game is ranked 10th in the conference. A big reason for Georgia Tech's struggles is its inability todes inside toughness for
and 10.6 rebounds per game, which is second best in the league. Kyle Anderson, Josh Brinkley, and Jarvis Threatt all contribute on a regular basis as well.
Losers of three straight and five of their last six, the Dukes will look to get back on track in this one. They lost 80-71 to the Old Dominion Monarchs on Thursday night which dropped their overall record to 10-14 and gave them a 3-9 mark in CAA action. Despite connecting on 45.2 percent of their attempts from the floor in their last three outings, the Dukes have been outshot in every game during that span. James Madison's scoring defense has not been impressive in league play, as conference rivals have an average of 69.9 ppg against it.
The Dukes have an undeniably talented backcourt duo in A.J. Davis and Humpty Hitchens. Davis and Hitchens are ranked fourth and fifth in the CAA in scoring, respectively. Davis was productive his last time out, as he scored 23 points and swiped four steals in the loss to Old Dominion. Hitchens was held to nine points by the Monarchs after back-to-back 20+ point performances. Andrey Semenov and Devon Moore both add a little scoring depth to the roster.
James Madison has been struggling without its leading rebounder Julius Wells. The Dukes lost the rebounding battle 47-29 to Old Dominion their last time out. With Hagins's active play inside on the glass, the Blue Hens should be able to dominate the battle on the boards and string together their second win in a row.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Delaware 71, James Madison 61
