GAME NOTES: The Tennessee State Tigers and Morgan State Bears will meet at the Orleans Arena this afternoon in final round action of the Las Vegas Invitational.
The Tigers dropped a heart-breaking 90-89 double-overtime decision to Mississippi Valley State on Friday. The loss was the second straight and the fourth in six games this season for Tennessee State, which won't be in action again until December 1st against Middle Tennessee.
The Bears also dropped a close one, falling to Cal Poly on Friday, 62-61. The loss kept Morgan State winless on the season at 0-5. Following this event, the Bears won't see action again until a December 3rd trip to Ohio University.
Jordan Cyphers scored 22 points, Patrick Miller and Robert Covington finished with 18 points and seven rebounds apiece and Wil Peters chipped in 14 points, but it wasn't enough to earn Tennessee State a win over the Delta Devils. Tennessee State trailed by as many as nine points with under five minutes remaining in regulation, but the Tigers clawed their way back, tying the game at 76 apiece and sending the matchup into overtime, before finally losing in the second extra session. Despite the 89-point barrage in the loss to MVSU, TSU has struggled with offensive consistency for the most part this season, averaging a modest 64.8 ppg on just .403 shooting. Covington leads the team in both scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg). Miller is next in scoring (9.3 ppg) and doles out a team-high 4.0 apg.
Kevin Thompson led the Bears with 23 points, while Ameer Ali and Ian Chiles both chipped in 10, but the team still came out on the wrong end of a one- point game. Cal Poly used a 14-4 run late in the game to take a 62-54 lead with under three minutes remaining in the contest, but Morgan State scored the next seven points to cut the deficit to one at 62-61. The Bears even had a chance for the win, but Ali missed two free-throws with two seconds left. Coming into this event, Morgan State was saddled with a -15.6 scoring margin, allowing foes to shoot nearly 50 percent from the floor, while racking up 77.8 ppg. Thompson will certainly see his scoring average of 13.3 ppg rise some with his performance against Cal Poly. Chiles was right on his season average of 10.3 ppg.
Both teams participated in hard-fought games yesterday. The Tigers have to feel good about their offensive performance against MVSU and perhaps build off that.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Tennessee State 65, Morgan State 59
