GAME NOTES: Still searching for their first victory of the season the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks will battle the Citadel Bulldogs this evening as part of the Hispanic College Fund Challenge.
After four games, the Bulldogs come into this matchup with an even 2-2 mark. The Citadel had no answers for Missouri State yesterday and fell to the Bears, 72-55. After this tournament the Bulldogs will battle West Virginia on the road, before returning home to host six straight games.
It has been a tough season thus far for the Hawks, who have gone winless through their first four games. UMES has dropped nine straight games dating back to last year and that includes the team's most recent setback, a 76-51 loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
The Bulldogs were ineffective in the loss to Missouri State, as the team shot just 40.0 percent from the floor, en route to just a 55 point performance. The Citadel made just 7-of-20 attempts from long range, and connected on a meager 12-of-21 shots from the foul line. Joe Wolfinger led the way in the loss with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Cameron Wells added 12 points off the bench. It was the second straight solid performance for Wells, who netted 24 points and dished out six assists in the team's victory over Eastern Michigan on Friday. Overall the team has had trouble posting points in the early stages of the season and comes into this contest netting just 60.5 ppg.
The Hawks had their wings clipped in their recent loss to Eastern Michigan, as Maryland-Eastern Shore shot a meager 31.0 percent from the field en route to the loss to the Eagles. UMES finished just 3-of-19 from behind the arc, and made only 12-of-16 attempts from the foul line. Not a single player finished in double-figures, as Kevin White led the way with eight points and five assists. Mark Robertson also tallied eight points, while Sean Berry posted seven points, but also committed five turnovers. Hillary Haley, who came into the contest against EMU leading the team with 15.3 ppg, was atrocious in the matchup, netting just 1-of-12 shots from the field, while finishing the game with six points and six rebounds.
Neither team has been very consistent offensively, but the Bulldogs have won a couple games up to this point, which is more than the Hawks have done thus far. Expect a low-scoring affair with The Citadel walking away with the win.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: The Citadel 65, Maryland-Eastern Shore 56
