NCAA Game Summary - NC State at Wake Forest

(Saturday, October 5)

Final Score: Wake Forest 28, NC State 13

Winston Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Tanner Price threw for 268 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns to lead the Wake Forest Demon Deacons over the NC State Wolfpack for a 28-13 victory in Atlantic Coast Conference play at BB&T Field.

Price completed 24-of-39 passes with three touchdowns to only interception and added a career-high 82 yards rushing while under center for the Demon Deacons (3-3,1-2 ACC). Michael Campanaro was Price's favorite target on the day, pulling in 12 catches for 153 yards and two scores.

For the Wolfpack (3-2,0-2), Pete Thomas finished with 257 yards on 27-of-43 passing, though he was picked off twice. Like Price, Thomas was his team's leading rusher, tacking on 60 yards on the ground. NC State was without leading rusher Matt Dayes for the game due to injury. Quinton Payton caught six balls for 98 yards and a touchdown, while Bryan Underwood snagged 11 catches for 64 yards.

After the teams traded punts to start the contest, Wake Forest got on the board first, using a 13-play, 80-yard drive to go up 7-0. Price ran it in from one yard out for the score. The Demon Deacons faced only one third down in that scoring drive.

NC State was able to take the lead late in the second quarter. After getting a 27-yard field goal midway through the second, the Wolfpack finally got into the endzone with less than two minutes left in the half on an 11-yard pass from Thomas to Payton that put the visitors up 10-7. That lead would be short lived however, as Wake Forest took the ball 75 yards in little over a minute and scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Price to Campanaro to give them a 14-10 lead going into the lockerroom. The big strike on that drive was a 54- yard pass down the middle from Price to tight end Spencer Bishop that set up the Demon Deacons at the Wolfpack 10-yard line.

Wake Forest extended its lead to 21-10 in the third with another touchdown pass from Price, this one a three-yard toss to Jared Crump for his first career score. That capped off a 10-play, 87-yard drive. The key play on that series was an NC State roughing the kicker penalty that brought the Wake Forest offense back on the field after they had settled for a Chad Hedlund 24- yard field goal.

The Wolfpack's sole scoring in the second half came on Niklas Sade's second field goal of the day, this one from 20 yards out with 4:47 left in the third to cut their deficit to just 21-13. That drive made it all the way to the Wake three-yard line before stalling.

NC State started its next possession in excellent position after intercepting Thomas at midfield. The offense wasted another opportunity, managing just three yards on the drive and was forced to punt. The Demon Deacons finished off the scoring with Price's fourth touchdown pass of the day, a 27-yarder to Campanaro that put the home squad up 28-13 early in the fourth.

The Demon Decons' defensive unit took control the rest of the way. On the Wolfpack's next possession, they got down to the Demon Deacon four-yard line before Thomas was intercepted. The Wake defense held again on the next series, forcing NC State to turn it over on downs. That was followed by another Thomas interception late in the game, as the Wolfpack dropped the decision in their first road game under coach Dave Doeren.

The Wake Forest defense had a strong night, finishing with four sacks, two interceptions and holding NC State to field goals on two of its three trips in the redzone. NC State was averaging over 200 yards rushing a game but the Demon Deacons held the Wolfpack to just 115 yards on the ground. Campanaro now has 206 receptions in his career, becoming just the second Wake Forest player with more than 200 career receptions and is just 10 receptions shy of the school record.
