College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Nate Freese sent a 52-yard field goal
attempt through the uprights as time expired to lift the Boston College Eagles
to a 29-26 victory over the Maryland Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference
thriller at Byrd Stadium.
Andre Williams had another impressive showing for Boston College (7-4, 4-3
ACC) as he racked up 263 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. With the
solid effort, Williams became the 16th player in NCAA history to surpass 2,000
rushing yards in a single season. Chase Rettig completed 6-of-14 pass attempts
for 120 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Alex Amidon made two
catches for 84 yards including a 74-yard touchdown reception. Steele Vivitto
anchored the defense with eight total tackles.
C.J. Brown led Maryland (6-5, 2-5) with 178 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-31
passing efficiency. Brown also scored once on the ground while Brandon Ross
compiled 44 yards on 11 carries. Amba Etta-Tawo made four grabs for 57 yards
and one score. Sean Davis made nine stops and an interception to stand on the
defensive side of the ball for the Terrapins.
The Eagles took an early lead as Freese converted a 22-yard field goal attempt
at the 11:10 mark of the opening period. Maryland answered with just
under six minutes left in the first quarter as Brad Craddock sent his 43-yard
field goal try through the uprights.
After Rettig fumbled at the Boston College 1-yard line, Maryland took its
first lead of the game with just under two minutes left in the first stanza as
Albert Reid punched it in to put the hosts ahead, 10-3.
Boston College's special teams unit gave its offense great field position
early in the second quarter by blocking a punt in Maryland's territory. The
Eagles evened the score on the next play as Williams rushed six yards into the
Maryland went back on top less than four minutes into the second half as Brown
completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Etta-Tawu.
Boston College scored its first points of the second half at the 1:09 mark of
the third quarter as Freese chipped in a 19-yard field goal try.
The Terrapins extended their advantage to 24-13 just over four minutes into
the final frame as Brown rushed three yards across the goal line. Boston
College wasted no time answering as Williams broke away for a 72-yard
touchdown run. The Eagles then went ahead, 26-24, with five minutes left to
play when Rettig connected with Amidon for the long passing score. However,
Freese had his extra-point try blocked and Anthony Nixon returned it to the
Eagles' end zone to even the score at 26.
Boston College fielded a punt with 1:32 left in regulation and drove 45 yards
in six plays to put Freese in position for his game-winning kick. Freese
actually missed his first try at the last second field goal attempt wide left,
but Maryland called a timeout just before the snap hoping to ice the Eagles'
place kicker. Freese then gathered himself and came up clutch to give Boston
College its fourth consecutive win.
Boston College compiled 374 yards of total offense but moved the chains only
11 times. The Terrapins finished with 15 first downs, but were held to only
278 total yards.
