(Saturday, September 21)
Final Score: Iowa 59, Western Michigan 3
Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Defense and special teams shined for the Iowa
Hawkeyes on a record-setting afternoon, as they made easy work of the Western
Michigan Broncos, 59-3, in non-conference action at Kinnick Stadium.
The Hawkeyes (3-1) had their highest-scoring contest since putting up 62
points on Northwestern in November of 2002. Kevonte Martin-Manley became the
first player in school history to have two punt returns for touchdowns in the
same game. B.J. Lowery also accomplished a program first by running back a
pair of interceptions for touchdowns.
Jake Rudock only needed to attempt 15 passes for Iowa, but he completed 10 of
those for 134 yards and two scores. The squad rushed for 258 yards, with
Jordan Canzeri leading the way with 73 yards and a touchdown.
Tyler Van Tubbergen struggled under center for WMU (0-4), going 14-of-32 for
114 yards with two interception. Zach Terrell also saw time at quarterback
but didn't fare any better (2-of-6, 21 yards, INT). Brian Fields had 20
touches for 115 total yards (58 rushing, 57 receiving).
The game was relatively quiet in the early going, with Mike Meyer's 20-yard
field goal the only source of points in the first 13 minutes of action. Rudock
accounted for the matchup's first touchdown when he hooked up with Jacob
Hillyer on a 21-yard scoring strike with 1:54 remaining in the first quarter.
At the 11:45 mark of the second quarter, Martin-Manley returned a punt 83
yards for a touchdown. Less than a minute later, following a WMU three-and-
out, he returned another punt to the house, this time from 63 yards out. He's
the first player since Oregon's Cliff Harris in 2010 to have two punt return
TDs in the same quarter.
WMU finally scored with under five minutes remaining in the first half on an
Andrew Haldeman 23-yard field goal, but Iowa would add two more touchdowns
before halftime. Mark Weisman ran in a four-yard touchdown, which was quickly
followed by a 35-yard interception return for a score by Lowery.
Lowery added his second pick-six early in the third quarter, returning a
Terrell interception 13 yards for a score. Rudock added another touchdown pass
later in the quarter, a 29-yarder to Damond Powell.
The rout continued early in the fourth quarter as Canzeri rushed in a 16-yard
score to give the Hawkeyes 35 unanswered points to end the game.
Iowa outgained WMU in total yardage, 446-209, and held a 12-minute advantage
in time of possession.
