Royals turn to prospect, call up Ventura

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals will turn to one of their top pitching prospects, Yordano Ventura, as the right-hander has been selected from Triple-A Omaha and will be making his major league debut Tuesday when the club takes on the Cleveland Indians at Kauffman Stadium in a game with playoff implications.

Entering Tuesday's action, with just 12 games remaining on their schedule, the Royals trail the Texas Rangers by 2 1/2 games for the final AL wild card spot. Cleveland trails Texas by one-half game and is two games ahead of Kansas City.

Ventura takes the rotation spot of left-hander Danny Duffy, who was scratched due to a mild flexor strain in his pitching arm. Duffy, having returned five starts ago from Tommy John surgery, had an MRI exam that showed no structural damage. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sept. 8, but it's not clear if Duffy, who is 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA since his return, will pitch again this season.

Ventura went a combined 8-6 with a 3.14 ERA in 26 games with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and the Storm Chasers this season, striking out 155 batters with 53 walks in 134 2/3 innings.

The Royals also placed infielder Carlos Pena on the 60-day DL following an appendectomy.

Pena had gone hitless in three at-bats in four games since being acquired from the Houston Astros.
