Pirates' Liriano earns NL Player of Week honors
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Francisco Liriano has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending August 4.
Liriano, who went 2-0 over 14 innings pitched with 14 strikeouts and a sparkling 0.64 ERA, won his second career weekly award. He last earned the honor for the week ending May 8, 2011 after tossing a no-hitter for the Minnesota Twins.
Liriano is 12-4 on the season with a 2.02 ERA for the NL Central-leading Pirates.
Others considered for the award included Liriano's teammate A.J. Burnett, the Atlanta Braves' Freddie Freeman, Chris Johnson, Justin Upton, Alex Wood and Craig Kimbrel, the St. Louis Cardinals' Matt Holliday and the Los Angeles Dodgers' Kenley Jansen.
