Description: Free agent QB Troy Smith has yet to receive a restricted free agent tender from the 49ers. SOURCE: CSN BAY AREA
Insight: This shouldn't come as a surprise since Jim Harbaugh never spoke about Troy in his future plans regarding the quarterback position. Raiders HC Hue Jackson, who coached Smith in Baltimore, could give Troy a look once he hits free agency.

Description: The 49ers aren't expected to bring back free agent QB Troy Smith for next season. SOURCE: CSN BAY AREA
Insight: Smith isn't accurate enough to run Jim Harbaugh's offense. It also doesn't help that Harbaugh's brother John didn't think enough of Smith to keep him around before the start of the Ravens' 2010 season.

12/26/2010 4:40:00 PM
Description: Alex Smith has replaced Troy Smith as the 49ers quarterback in the 4th quarter.
Insight: We're not sure if Troy Smith was benched or if he was hurt when James Hall sacked him on the previous drive. Troy seems to be in good spirits and health on the sidelines, so it doesn't appear that he's hurt. We'll continue to monitor this situation for a better explanation.

12/22/2010 11:00:00 PM
Description: NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports Smith has been named the 49ers' starting QB for Week 16 against St. Louis.
Insight: Alex Smith will go back to the bench. Troy threw for 356 yards against the Rams back in Week 10, so this looks like the right move based on that success. (RapidDraft.com)

12/22/2010 3:31:00 PM
Description: It's being reported that 49ers QB Troy Smith will start against the Rams in Week Sixteen. SOURCE: TWITTER
Insight: The move makes sense after Alex Smith's debacle against the Chargers and Troy's success in the first meeting against the Rams where he threw for 356 yards and a touchdown. Both Smith's are free agents in 2011, but Troy is a better future prospect if the coaching staff ends up staying intact. Troy is only a recommendation as a low-tier QB2 in two-quarterback leagues.

Description: The Sacramento Bee reports 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary is open to the possibility of going back to Troy Smith after Alex Smith's poor performance on Thursday night against San Diego.
Insight: Alex may get another start in Week 15 against St. Louis, but he may be on a short leash. (RapidDraft.com)

12/6/2010 12:01:00 PM
Description: Smith went 10-for-25 for 194 yards with one touchdown and one interception along with three carries for 28 yards against Green Bay on Sunday.
Insight: Smith is just not a good fantasy option. (RapidDraft.com)

11/30/2010 10:02:00 AM
Description: Smith went 11-for-23 for 129 yards with one touchdown and one interception with three carries for six yards against the Cardinals on Monday night.
Insight: Smith has now led the 49ers to wins in three of his four starts, but that has not equated to huge fantasy production. (RapidDraft.com)

11/26/2010 2:05:00 PM
Description: The Sacramento Bee reports 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary said he won't hesitate to go back to Alex Smith if Smith struggles again.
Insight: Alex is fully recovered from a recent shoulder injury, and Troy may be on a short leash and that makes him a risky fantasy play on Monday night against Arizona. (RapidDraft.com)

11/22/2010 6:01:00 PM
Description: Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary said Smith will start Week 12 against Arizona.
Insight: Alex Smith (left shoulder) has been medically cleared to play, but Smith has shown more promise despite his poor performance in Week 11 against Tampa Bay. (RapidDraft.com)

11/22/2010 4:55:00 PM
Description: 49ers QB Troy Smith will be the team's starting quarterback in Week Twelve against the Cardinals. SOURCE: TWITTER
Insight: Smith looked awful against the Buccaneers, but he still provides more upside over Alex Smith, who has been medically cleared to play after being out with a shoulder injury. If Troy puts up another bad game this week, Mike Singletary may have no choice but to turn back to Alex.

11/22/2010 11:30:00 AM
Description: Following the 21-10 loss to the Buccaneers, 49ers HC Mike Singletary refused to name a starting quarterback for Week Twelve. SOURCE: TWITTER
Insight: After two solid starts, Troy Smith came crashing down Sunday, going 18-of-31 passing for 148 yards, a pick and taking six sacks. Plus, Smith totally destroyed the fantasy value of both Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree in the process. The 49ers face the Cardinals Week Twelve.

11/22/2010 9:03:00 AM
Description: David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary was non-committal about his starting QB after Sunday's 21-0 loss to Tampa Bay.
Insight: Smith went just 18-for-31 for 148 yards and an interception while taking six sacks on Sunday. Alex Smith (left shoulder) is now healthy, so a switch may be in order. (RapidDraft.com)

11/15/2010 4:23:00 PM
Description: 49ers QB Troy Smith will officially stay on as the team's starting quarterback for Week Eleven. SOURCE: TWITTER
Insight: Mike Singletary would be stupid to give the gig back to Alex Smith, even though Troy has faced soft defenses in St. Louis and Denver a couple weeks ago. Smith can really prove himself against a better Buccaneers secondary this week.

11/15/2010 4:00:00 PM
Description: Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary confirmed that Smith will remain the team's starting QB in Week 11.
Insight: This is not a surprise, even if Alex Smith (shoulder) may be ready to play on Sunday against Tampa Bay. (RapidDraft.com)

11/15/2010 9:05:00 AM
Description: CSN Bay Area reports 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary refused to commit to Smith as the team's starting quarterback following Sunday's win over St. Louis.
Insight: Smith threw for 356 yards against the Rams, and has now led back-to-back wins. Not sure what else he needs to do to secure the job in Singletary's eyes. (RapidDraft.com)

11/15/2010 3:24:00 AM
Description: Though HC Mike Singletary won't confirm it, the buzz around San Francisco is that Troy Smith has locked up the starting QB gig for the rest of the season.
Insight: Smith finished 17 of 28 for 356 yards and a TD in San Francisco's Week 10 OT win over St. Louis. Two important notes: 1) He is 2-0 in his last two starts and now the Niners are 3-6 on the season and back in contention in the NFC West. 2) He hasn't turned the ball over in two games, which is probably the most important thing to Singletary.

11/12/2010 6:01:00 PM
Description: CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reports 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary announced Smith will start against the Rams on Sunday.
Insight: This was not a big secret, but Smith is not a terrific fantasy option outside of leagues where you start two quarterbacks. (RapidDraft.com)

11/11/2010 11:03:00 PM
Description: CSN Bay Area reports 49ers' offensive coordinator Mike Johnson revealed his game plan this week is being geared toward Smith starting Sunday against St. Louis.
Insight: 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary has not officially announced a starting QB for this week, but Smith has handled first-team practice reps all week. (RapidDraft.com)

11/9/2010 2:12:00 PM
Description: 49ers HC Mike Singletary hasn't settled on a starting quarterback for Week Ten against the Rams. SOURCE: TWITTER
Insight: No need for Singletary to tip his hand so early in the week, but Troy Smith will be the starter over Alex Smith. While Troy wasn't that impressive against the Broncos two weeks ago, he still offers more upside.
