(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox blew a chance to pad their lead atop the American League Central standings after an embarrassing loss Tuesday night versus the Minnesota Twins.

The division-leading White Sox can at least maintain a slim one-game lead with a win Wednesday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field, and will be rooting for Cleveland again in its matchup with Detroit. The Tigers are right on Chicago's tail in the AL Central and look to salvage their finale of a three-game series against the Indians.

Chicago starter Jose Quintana was banged around for seven runs in just 1 1/3 innings and Philip Humber gave up eight more in relief for the White Sox, who were staring down a 17-4 hole by the fifth inning.

"This is just one of those, we'll forget this one and play tomorrow," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

DeWayne Wise hit a pair of doubles, drove in two and scored once for Chicago, losers in seven of its last nine tries. Dayan Viciedo posted two doubles as well, a run scored and an RBI in defeat. The White Sox recorded a franchise- best 10 two-base hits on the night to no avail, and are 1-1 on a 10-game homestand. They will also host Kansas City and Detroit.

Jake Peavy hopes to break out of his slump when he takes the mound Wednesday. Peavy is 0-3 with a 4.36 ERA in his last five starts and previously toed the rubber in a 7-4 defeat at the hands of Detroit on Friday. He allowed six runs and nine hits in six innings to fall to 9-10 in 26 starts with a 3.28 ERA.

Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner, defeated Minnesota on Aug. 1 and is 2-1 with a 2.25 earned run average in three starts against the club this season. The righty owns a career mark of 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA in nine career starts in this series.

Minnesota will wrap up its six-game road trip today and is 3-2 so far.

In last night's lopsided pounding of the Pale Hose, Chris Parmelee hit a three-run homer during a 10-run fifth inning and finished with four RBI. Ryan Doumit went 3-for-6 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored, while Justin Morneau chipped in two hits and three runs scored as well.

"Balls were flying all over the place, as they always do in this ballpark," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Twins starter Scott Diamond benefited from the offense and gave up four runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts over five innings. Anthony Swarzak and Luis Perdomo combined to allow five runs in relief.

The Twins will begin a 10-game homestand this weekend versus the Indians, Royals and White Sox, but first target a series victory with P.J. Walters on the mound this afternoon. Walters is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA in seven starts and did not get out of the first inning in a June 13 matchup with Philadelphia.

Walters gave up four runs and four hits in that one. He then landed on the disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation and went 3-3 with a 4.01 ERA in eight rehab starts with Triple-A Rochester.

"He didn't throw the ball great in Triple-A," Gardenhire said. "But I think it was about building arm strength and all those things. Now, he's going to have to get back to locating and using his breaking ball."

Walters went the distance in a 9-2 win at Chicago on May 22 and allowed two runs with eight Ks and two walks. He is 2-0 in three road starts in 2012.

Chicago is 10-4 against the Twins this season and had won six in a row as the host in the series until Tuesday's blowout. The White Sox are 18-6 in the past 22 matchups between the two AL Central foes.
