San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cashner struck out a career-high 11 batters en route to a one-hit shutout, as the San Diego Padres defeated the Detroit Tigers, 6-0, in the opening matchup of a three-game set.
Cashner (1-1) spun his second career one-hit shutout, with the other coming in a 2-0 win against Pittsburgh on Sept. 16, 2013.
Chase Headley stroked a two-run homer and had three RBI. Chris Denorfia, Seth Smith, and Jedd Gyorko each added an RBI in San Diego's second straight win.
Rajai Davis provided Detroit's lone hit and had two stolen bases. Starter Rick Porcello (1-1) gave up five runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings for the Tigers, who have dropped three of their last four.
"He was mixing up his pitches and spots," said Davis on Cashner. "He was able to locate. He stuck with what worked."
Everth Cabrera singled to lead off the first for the Padres. After Denorfia and Smith both grounded out, Gyorko tripled on a fly ball to right to score Cabrera. Headley came up next and lined a double to center to score Gyorko and give the Padres a 2-0 lead.
"That was a good swing on a slider coming in to him (Headley)," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He had some good swings."
Cashner retired 14 straight before Davis singled on a line drive to center with one out in the sixth. Davis stole second and then third before Ian Kinsler walked. Miguel Cabrera grounded into a double play to end Detroit's lone threat.
Smith doubled on a fly ball to left to lead off the sixth, Two batters later, Headley launched a two-run shot into the right-field seats for a 4-0 lead.
San Diego made it a 6-0 game in the seventh. Cashner singled to left with one out, ending Porcello's outing. Luke Putkonen entered the game to pitch to Everth Cabrera, who singled and stole second. Denorfia grounded into a fielder's choice to score Cashner from third. Cabrera came home after Smith grounded into a fielder's choice.
Detroit was shut out for the first time this season. The Tigers had hit a home run in each game prior to the loss ... Porcello made his first career start against the Padres.
