Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Schafer smacked a three-run
triple as part of a six-run second inning as the Minnesota Twins defeated the
Detroit Tigers, 12-4, in the opener of a doubleheader.
Kennys Vargas had two hits and drove in five, Joe Mauer was 2-for-3 with three
RBI and two runs scored and Danny Santana posted a pair of hits and runs
scored for the Twins, who have won three straight on the heels of a four-game
"Trying to tell everybody to keep that foot on the gas pedal," Mauer said.
Yohan Pino (2-5) allowed four runs -- one earned -- on six hits and two walks
with six strikeouts over five frames to notch the win.
Buck Farmer (0-1) surrendered seven runs on five hits and two walks over 1 1/3
frames for Detroit, which has dropped three straight and allowed 33 runs in

The game was tied 1-1 before the Twins exploded for six runs in the second and
added two more in the third to effectively wrap up the game.
Singles by Eduardo Nunez and Eduardo Escobar preceded Eric Fryer being hit by
a pitch, which loaded the bases. Schafer then cleared the bags when he laced
his triple into the gap in right center. Brian Dozier walked following a
Santana strikeout and Mauer's double brought home Schafer and Dozier. Mauer
was then pushed across on Vargas' two-bagger for a 7-1 game.
Dozier hit an RBI double and Vargas added a sacrifice fly in the third to give
the Twins a 9-1 advantage.
Detroit got three runs back in the fifth on consecutive run-scoring singles by
Ian Kinsler, Ezequiel Carrera and Miguel Cabrera, trimming the deficit to 9-4.
Vargas' bases-clearing double in the seventh made it 12-4. Santana was aboard
with a triple, while Dozier and Mauer worked walks prior to the hit.
Minnesota opened the scoring in the first on Mauer's RBI single before Nick
Castellanos' RBI double in the second tied the score.
Minnesota pounded out 14 hits after recording 20 runs and 20 hits in Friday's
opener of this four-game set ... The Twins ended up 6-for-14 with runners in
scoring position, while the Tigers finished 3-for-8.
