New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu and Seattle Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager have been named the American League Co-Players of the Week for the period ending April 27.
Abreu batted .310 (9-for-29) with one double, five homers, 14 RBI and eight runs scored in seven games last week. He led the majors in RBI and total bases (25) and tied Seager for tops overall in home runs.
This past Friday, Abreu went 3-for-5 and hit a game-winning grand slam in the ninth inning, his second homer of the game, to give the White Sox a dramatic 9-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Abreu is the first White Sox rookie to win AL Player of the Week since infielder Josh Fields on Sept. 24, 2007.
Seager hit .409 (9-for-22) with five homers and 11 RBI over six games last week.
On Wednesday, Seager launched a three-run, game-winning homer with one out in the ninth inning as the Mariners beat the Houston Astros, 5-3. Seager drove in all five of Seattle's runs, also hitting a two-run homer in the seventh.
This is the first career weekly honor for both players.
