Rangers add Snyder to catching corps

Surprise, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers have signed catcher Chris Snyder to a minor league contract.

The Rangers are in need of catching depth after it was announced Monday that Geovany Soto would miss 10-to-12 weeks with a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Snyder had been with the Washington Nationals this spring and hit .294 in 17 at-bats before being released Monday.

The 33-year-old Houston native played just nine games for Baltimore in 2013 and spent most of the season at Triple-A Norfolk. He was 2-for-20 with the Orioles and hit .243 with six home runs and 24 RBI in 52 minor league games.

Snyder is a career .224 hitter with 77 homers and 298 RBI in 715 games with the Diamondbacks, Pirates, Astros and Orioles.

With Soto sidelined, J.P. Arencibia is expected to handle the bulk of the catching duties for the Rangers with journeyman Robinson Chirinos also on the roster.
